Songfacts®:

  • Parker McCollum's self-titled 2025 album opens with "My Blue," a bleak tale about a guy named Jackie whose troubled childhood put him on a dark path toward drug addiction and murder.

McCollum's previous albums were recorded in his native Texas and Nashville, but he insisted on going to New York City for his fifth album. Recording "My Blue," which clocks in at 5:11, at the Power Station was a transformative experience.

"We just played it and played it and played it," he told Off The Record. "And that's a long song, and we played it, and then we played it and so... I don't think I'll cut a record any other way for the rest of my career."
  • The dark track isn't for everybody, which is why it's the first song you hear. "I knew I wanted 'My Blue' to be the first song on the record, because I knew if you heard that song and you didn't get it and it didn't do it for you, then this record's not for you," McCollum told Apple Music. "My agent the other day joked, ‘Well, if you like cocaine and suicide, this record's for you.'"
