Songfacts®:

  • Written by Davis, this song finds him encountering and old flame. He didn't expect to see her, and all the old feelings come rushing back. He recounts the breakup, dredging up the awful memories of how she moved on to another man who "satisfies her mind." Seeing her again is unbearable, as he's nowhere near over her.
  • Paul Davis enjoyed a long career as a singer/songwriter in pop, country and soul music from the late 1960s through the 1980s. This, probably his best-known song, blends all three genres.
  • This song had an unusually long run in the US Top 40, taking almost five months to climb to #7 where it spent three weeks. Davis had a few other US Top 40 hits over the next few years, including a #6 with "'65 Love Affair" and a #1 Country hit with "You're Still New To Me" (a duet with Marie Osmond) in 1986 before retiring from the music business. Davis died of a heart attack at age 60 on April 22, 2008. >>

  • Bruce from Myrtle BeachI had one of those mishaps in my life. No my heart just can’t hide that old feeling inside. We recently met after 30 plus years and that previous statement holds true. Oh how stupid I was…..
  • Scott from AustinThis came out after my fiancée dumped me in December 1977 and I couldn’t listen to it for a long long long time. It was too bittersweet, and truth it 44 years later I still hurt. I still hurt and deep down inside I know she was the only girl for me, The heartbreak affected me throughout my life, I guess I’ve never gotten over her.
  • Katie Smith from South CarolinaWhen Paul sings I Still Go Crazy, i nearly cry. I can feel his sadness. I've only had this with my first boyfriend and we broke up in eleventh grade. We knew we weren't going to be together for ever, but the break up minute is so painful. Paul sang my heart song.
  • Crazy Guy from GeorgiaI was 17 years old when the song came out going through a divorce. It It was the way that I felt at the time. Still touches me deep in my soul.
  • Pete from Hermosa BeachBeautiful song. It brings back such memories. I am moved, sitting here in a Friday night....
  • Michele From Texas from Irving, TexasThis song takes me back to my childhood. It's hauntingly beautiful. I, like another commenter, was very young when it came out (only 3 yrs old) but grew up listening to it and always remember hearing it on the radio in our station wagon. I feel like it was in a show or a movie back then, but I've Googled and can't find out what it was in. Sad to read he passed when he was 60 yrs old. Such a beautiful song and he had such a beautiful voice!
  • Seventhmist from 7th HeavenI first heard this song on a rain-soaked night during a camping trip. Whenever I hear it, I'm back in that leaky tent.
  • Chuck from CharlotteDrew from 'Bama, I just heard Diane Birch's cover of this song and it dawned on me that Styx copied the keyboard lick on"Babe." I've known both songs for 40 years and only just noticed!
  • Alan from TexasHasn't anyone noticed that they have the wrong credits above? The listed credits are actually for the song of the same name (not a cover, a completely different song) by Flesh for Lulu on the soundtrack to the motion picture "Some Kind of Wonderful". I've seen this mistake on so many lyric sites its getting on my nerves. Please change the credits. Paul Davis was not only the original artist but the composer and lyricist as well.
  • Dodge from Casper, WyThis smooth, melodic hit broke the longetivity record on the charts previously held since 1940 by Bing Crosby's White Christmas. Sadly, it would only stay until Michael Jackson's title song to the smash album Thriller came out to hang on longer in 1983.

No one has yet mentioned that the talented Davis played the role of the apostle Paul in the 1970 Rock Opera, Jesus Christ Superstar.
  • Bill from Marieatta, BahrainRegarding Dave from bama's comment: I believe the notes are f#,g,f#,d b
  • Paul from Detroit, MiBarry, I loved Sweet Life! My favorite of all Paul Davis songs. He was a true talent.
  • Barry from Sauquoit, NyGreat song; spent 40 weeks in the Top 100, also had a record titled 'Sweet Life' in 1978 and it spent 21 weeks in the Top 100 and never rose higher that No. 17!!!
  • Drew from B'ham, AlThe end of the refrain to this song has some unknown instrument playing a pattern of 5 notes (4 notes, one played twice), & the pattern played multiple times. It's perfectly identical to that note pattern in the refrain of "Babe" by Styx just before the "Babe, I love you!" lyric. Same time signature in fact. Only a different key & octave, & probably a diff. instrument. But whenever I hear one, I always think of the other. Coincidence or not?
  • Renee from Bloomington, MnRIP, Paul. Whenever I listen to I Go Crazy I'll enjoy your wonderful voice.
  • Mike from Mountlake Terrace, WaThanks for a great song Paul, your music will live on forever. Paul Davis ~ April 21, 1948 - April 22, 2008
  • J from Bay Springs, MsI was shocked when I heard of Paul Davis' death this morning. He had such a beautiful voice and his songs meant something to so many. His songs will keep him forever in our hearts.
  • Bill from Mentor On The Lake, OhI turned 6 years old toward the beginning of this song's chart run. I remember I loved it, but I don't think I quite knew what it was about. I think I just loved the way it sounded. It's still one of my favorite songs. I love his voice, and this song was well written & produced. It should've been a #1 hit.
  • John from Fort Worth, TxI particularly liked Davis's 1982 "'65 Love Affair" and his later remake of "Love Or Let Me Be Lonely" which had first been done in the early '70s. I remember "I Go Crazy" very well from when it was new and I have loved it ever since. I didn't know that "I Go Crazy" had been done by the same artist till just now! Paul Davis had a particularly moving way of getting the sentiment across when he sang.
    John Martin, 46, Texas
  • Don from Columbia, MoDavis said in an interview "He was just thinking of the past in his youth but no one in particular" he also makes a great point when he mentions; how after along time not seeing someone then running across them can cause a spark. This song like his other songs show his heart is in the right place.
  • Alma from Del Mar, CaI love this song
