Songfacts®:

  • "Old Castles" finds Paul Weller using a fairy story in order to ponder on self-doubt and mortality.

But the old king is quiet
Looks into the fire, I think he knows
That his bubble has burst, and what's worse
    Is now it shows

When Uncut magazine asked Paul Weller who's the old king in this song, he replied: "Royalty in general, really. It's meant to be one of those old fashioned fairy stories - their vain king trapped in his own little world with his people being unhappy. You can read into it whatever. But royalty is such a ridiculous anachronism in this day and age. We still have princes and princesses."
