Songfacts®:

  • "What an Awesome God," released in April 2025, is Phil Wickham's musical thank-you note to Rich Mullins, whose original anthem "Awesome God" has been sung with varying degrees of key accuracy and enthusiastic hand-raising in churches everywhere since the days of cassette tapes.
  • Wickham teamed up with producer Jonathan Smith ("House Of The Lord," "This Is Our God") to put together a new version of "Awesome God." Only this isn't just a polished-up remix with a few extra drums and some strategically placed "woahs." No, this is a full-fledged reimagining. They've kept Mullins' chorus but wrapped it in shiny new verses, a generous helping of contemporary instrumentation, and a big choir.

Wickham described the project as an honor and expressed hope it would help listeners recognize "what an awesome God we serve."
  • Wickham dropped the song on April 11, 2025. Its release coincides with what would have been Mullins' 70th birthday (he was killed in a motor accident in 1997), making it a timely homage to his enduring legacy in Christian music.
  • In what we imagine would have made Rich grin in his ragamuffin way, "What An Awesome God" soared straight into the #5 spot on the Hot Christian Songs chart. It was Phil Wickham's first-ever Top 10 debut on the Billboard streaming, airplay, and sales tally.
