Songfacts®:

  • Throughout "Mosquito," PinkPantheress broods over her relationship to money and material possessions following her newfound fame. She feels overwhelmed by the amount of wealth she's acquired at such a young age. PinkPanthress refers to the money like she does to a fickle lover, fearing he will abandon her just as she's scared of losing her fortune.
  • The title does not appear in the lyrics. It's unclear why PinkPantheress titled it "Mosquito." Maybe just as a mosquito is drawn to blood, she is drawn to her loved one, in this instance, money.

Alternatively, the title of the song could be evocative. Mosquito is a word that suggests something small, annoying, and persistent, and PinkPantheress cannot escape her insecure feelings about her new wealth.
  • PinkPantheress wrote the song with Greg Kurstin. The American producer and songwriter has worked with many eminent artists, including Kelly Clarkson ("What Doesn't Kill You (Stronger)"), Sia ("Cheap Thrills") and Adele ("Hello," "Easy On Me").
  • PinkPantheress first teased "Mosquito" on TikTok on June 12, 2022, with a drum-and-bass inspired instrumental, and later on October 12, 2022, with a softer bossa nova production and quieter vocals. She finally released a reworked version of the bossa nova version on September 29, 2023. "I switched up the beat to the original cos I prefer bossa nova vibes," PinkPantheress said.
  • The accompanying music video, directed by Sophie Muller, depicts PinkPantheress and her friends going on a shopping spree. It co-stars actresses Charithra Chandran (Bridgerton), India Amarteifio (Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story) and Yara Shahidi (Grown-ish).
