Songfacts®:

  • This song is about the 1992 Los Angeles riots, which were going on while the band was working on their debut album. The riots were a flashpoint for race relations, sparked by the acquittal of four white police officers who were caught on tape beating Rodney King, an unarmed Black motorist. Sublime, Garth Brooks and other artists released songs with some commentary on the social and political impacts of the riots, but "Porno For Pyros" is from the perspective of a pyromanic who gets real excited when he sees the riots on TV and jumps in to join the action because he likes fires and mayhem. It's a punk rocker that gives the band an excuse to shout "Porno For Pyros!" over and over in the chorus.
  • This is one of those Bad Company trifectas where the song, artist and album all have the same name. Many fans assumed the band name came from watching the LA riots, but it didn't - they had the band name before the riots happened and before writing the song.

Porno For Pyros is fronted by Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell, who formed the group after his previous band, Jane's Addiction, called it quits. Farrell was looking at a fireworks catalog when one of their tour managers said, "It's like porno for pyros," giving Farrell the idea. When they saw the LA riots on TV, they couldn't resist writing a song with that title.
  • A track from the first of the two Porno For Pyros albums, this song is one of their live favorites, a blast of goofy, mosh-happy fun. They played it as their encore at Woodstock '94, where they were followed rather incongruently by Bob Dylan. Their next album was released in 1996, when guitarist Peter DiStefano got a cancer diagnosis. In 1997, a planned Pyros tour was cancelled and Perry Farrell re-formed Jane's Addiction. Pyros returned to action in 2020 and embarked on their farewell tour in 2024.
