Songfacts®:

  • This braggadocios rap song finds Pusha T and guest Jay-Z reflecting on their luxurious lives.
  • The track starts with the intro and chorus where Pusha T flaunts his wealth.

    Neck and wrist don't lie

The expansive jewelry Pusha T wears on his neck and wrist confirms he is seriously rich.
  • Next comes Pusha T's verse where he recalls his previous career as a drug dealer.

Summertime, Winterfell, I'm the Night King
The Colgate kilo, the hood needs whitening
  • Jay-Z takes the baton, answering back critics of his status as a street legend. Hova concludes his verse by replying to those who question whether he would have been successful if the late Notorious B.I.G. had stayed alive.

They like, "If BIG was alive, Hov wouldn't be in his position"
If BIG had survived, y'all would have got The Commission
Hov was gon' always be Hov
It 'twas the universe will 'cause Allah said so, and now I'm here

Jay believes that Allah willed him to a rap superstar, whether or not Biggie Smalls lived on.
  • "Neck & Wrist" marks Pusha T and Jay-Z's first collaboration since the ex-Clipse member's 2016 single "Drug Dealers Anonymous." That song also found the two rappers harking back to their days as street hustlers. The only other time Pusha T and Jay-Z worked together was when they both appeared on Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy track "So Appalled," alongside Cyhi the Prynce, Swizz Beatz, and RZA.
  • Pusha's longtime friend and frequent beatmaker Pharrell Williams supplied the drum-heavy production. Pharrell also sings the post-chorus and the "neck and wrist don't lie" line on the hook.
  • Pusha recorded "Neck & Wrist" for It's Almost Dry. The rapper's fourth studio album, it became his first US chart-topper when it debuted on the Billboard 200 summit.
