  • Remi Wolf released "Twiggy" on July 31, 2026, as the lead single from her third album, Mud. Built around a fingerpicked acoustic guitar, the song begins as a portrait of romantic infatuation and gradually turns into something messier, complete with post-breakup heartache, self-reproach, and a few unflattering revelations.
  • The track took shape during a writing retreat in a log cabin in Big Bear, California, following years of continuous touring. Wolf worked with a tight circle of collaborators, including her primary songwriting partner Solomonophonic and longtime friend Jack DeMeo. Her friend and sister-in-law Gigi Grombacher also stayed at the cabin and contributed to other tracks on Mud, though she isn't credited on "Twiggy."

Wolf's touring bandmates, drummer Paul Cherry and guitarist Jamie McLaughlin, co-wrote the track as well. McLaughlin's other credits include co-producing Zach Bryan's 2026 EP Young Manhood and Other Donatable Organs.
  • "Twiggy" starts with the kind of specific details that make a new crush seem irresistible. Wolf fixates on a heart-shaped birthmark and goes skinny-dipping in a stranger's swimming pool. By the end, however, she is confronting his mommy issues and recklessness before declaring that she actually hates the person she has been singing about. Romance, as usual, fails to follow the plan.

Wolf keeps things light when explaining the track's meaning: "I wrote Twiggy about people I've been with that lack both butts and emotional availability. And how I like that. Or maybe it's just about the messiness of addiction? I don't know, you decide,," she joked.
  • The title nods to Twiggy, the nickname of British model, actress, and singer Lesley Lawson, who rose to international fame in the 1960s for her slender frame and signature look. The subject of the track appears to be similarly lean and gangly, while the single artwork shows Wolf buried in branches and twigs, giving the title a literal visual twist.
  • Other songs uses of "twiggy" to describe a thin physique include:

Manic Street Preachers references the model on "4st 7lb," a track on their 1994 album The Holy Bible that explores anorexia and severe self-starvation. Lyricist Richey Edwards wrote, "Legs bend, stockinged I am twiggy," capturing the extreme physical decay of the disorder.

On a lighter note, Jimmy Fallon uses the name on his 2014 comedy track "EW!" featuring Will.i.am, where he pokes fun at body comparisons with the line, "And Sally's booty's twiggy so she called her friend Cybie."
  • Wolf co-directed the "Twiggy" music video alongside Ganna Bogdan. It shows the singer rolling around in a mud pit with Cole Preston, drummer for Wallows, who plays the title character. Preparing the mud proved far more complicated than expected for a production centered on two people getting filthy. "You can't just go to Home Depot, buy a bag of dirt and put water in it because it has f–king parasites in it," she told Billboard.

After researching how reality TV shows handle similar setups, she discovered that Survivor ships in earth from around the United States and carefully sifts massive quantities of soil to produce "spa dirt." Despite her preparations, filming proved very uncomfortable and Wolf ended up with scraped knees and uncontrollable shivering. "F–k. I don't think I'd make it on Survivor," she recalled thinking afterward.
  • Wolf debuted "Twiggy" live on July 24, 2026, during a surprise appearance alongside Paramore lead singer Hayley Williams during her set at the Newport Folk Festival.
  • Mud grew out of a period of deep self-reflection, spurred by a breakup and the exhaustion of life on the road. "I wanted to write songs about the way I was feeling, and I needed to heal," Wolf told NME, adding she preferred working surrounded by friends, playing guitar, and singing together. "I was processing a breakup, so there's a lot of yearning and longing. I was also feeling kind of down on myself. I'd been on the road so much, and I felt very removed from my own body… So I was asking, 'How do I find home in my own being?'"

"Twiggy" captures that search in miniature: an attraction that begins with physical details and unravels into emotional complications, with Wolf examining her own role in the wreckage. The gentle acoustic guitar sets a quiet tone, but the feelings beneath it are anything but simple.
