Songfacts®:

  • This song tells the story of a drug addict, which Rickie Lee Jones says is obvious to her, but not be to most listeners. "I allowed myself as much license as I wanted in order to tell you the story of the girl and these families of drug addicts and what is lost and what is never found again," she said in More Songwriters on Songwriting.
  • Jones moved from Los Angeles to New Orleans in 2013. She ended up living next to a guy who played soul music that went right through the walls. Instead of complaining, she took it in and used it for inspiration, crafting a melody she used on this song.
