Songfacts®:

  • "Ten Pairs Of Boots" tracks the trajectory of Green's life starting when he was 7 years and got his first pair of boots "with room to grow." Each new pair marks milestones and mistakes along the way, from finding God in a Baptist church as a kid to becoming best buds with Jack and Coke in his teens. By the time he reaches his eighth pair, he learns the sobering news that he's going to be a father. The story comes full circle when he takes his own son to get boots with room to grow.

Green usually writes his own songs, but this one was written by Joe Fox, Seth Ennis, Chase McGill and Josh Miller. The singer told the Off the Record podcast that he doesn't usually gravitate towards outside songs because they sound like they were written with other artists in mind.

"I get a lot of Morgan Wallen songs sent to me," he said. "And they're great songs, just I don't live in that space. When somebody sends me something, I'm always looking for something that I think sounds like me, but also something that I couldn't have come up with. That's what you want. You want a better version of something you would do. And getting to two pairs of boots and talking about having a son at the end, I've never lived that."
