  • "Dumb & Poetic" is an anthem for anyone who's ever fallen for the charm of a carefully cultivated intellectual façade. Sabrina Carpenter takes us on a rueful journey through the dawning realization that the seemingly soulful persona of a romantic partner was, in fact, as thin as tissue paper.
  • Carpenter laments being seduced by the ex's intellectual swagger - the kind of guy who drops Leonard Cohen quotes at parties. Yet, as the layers peel away, it becomes increasingly clear that all those deep thoughts and gentle manners were just a smokescreen. His soft-spoken demeanor and love for floor meditation and mushrooms, Carpenter discovered, were nothing more than superficial traits, hollow gestures meant to distract from an otherwise vacant soul.

Carpenter tears into this pretender, declaring that an affinity for poetry and hallucinogens does not a real man make. She points out that his "poetic" ways were all part of an elaborate act - a ruse designed to keep her dangling on a thread, stuck in his self-absorbed world of vague therapy jargon and artful dodging, all while he steered clear of actual communication.
  • "Dumb & Poetic" is a track on Carpenter's sixth album, Short n' Sweet. "I called it Short n' Sweet for multiple reasons," she told Apple Music's Zane Lowe. "It was not because I'm vertically challenged. It was really like I thought about some of these relationships and how some of them were the shortest I've ever had, and they affected me the most."

And therein lies the rub: it's not the length of a relationship but the depth of its impact - a theme Carpenter explores with both a scalpel and a smirk.

Carpenter explained further that the inspiration behind the song came from her experience with these brief but intensely memorable relationships. "Sometimes I respond to situations very nicely, and sometimes... not so nicely," she mused, smiling. "'Dumb & Poetic' is one of those songs where I decided to not be so nice."

The result is a gently strummed acoustic ballad that doubles as a merciless takedown of a guy whose sleazy habits hide behind a façade of self-improvement, New Age rituals, and an artsy record collection.
  • As for who the song's directed at, fans have plenty of theories. Many believe "Dumb & Poetic" may be drawing from Carpenter's rumored entanglements with Shawn Mendes and Joshua Bassett. Let's take a look.

    1) The lyrics hint at certain interests and behaviors that seem a little too on-the-nose to be mere coincidence. References to meditation, self-help books, and the singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen all happen to align rather neatly with Mendes' well-documented proclivities. The guy has spoken at length on all these topics in interviews.

    2) Carpenter and Mendes were briefly rumored to be an item in early 2023, a claim Mendes was quick to deny even as he was spotted wearing what appeared to be Carpenter's birthstone around his neck at a Vanity Fair party. To add a little more spice, he was later seen smooching his ex, Camila Cabello, at Coachella.

    3) Then there's Joshua Bassett, another name in Carpenter's little black book. Bassett's tastes seem to run in the same circles as Mendes' - meditation, self-help books, etc. He's even covered Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" and publicly mentioned dabbling in the world of psychedelics.
  • Carpenter teamed up with Julia Michaels, Amy Allen, and John Ryan to craft this track. Amy Allen contributed to every Short n' Sweet song and Michaels and Ryan to multiple tracks.
  • Ryan's production on "Dumb & Poetic" is intentionally spare - just Carpenter, a guitar, and enough open space for every sigh and caustic lyric to land with maximum impact.
