Songfacts®:

  • When Selena Gomez announced her engagement to producer Benny Blanco on December 11, 2024, the lovebirds weren't content to just pledge eternal devotion. Instead, they made an album about their love story – because what better way to celebrate a relationship than by immortalizing it in a full-length studio project?

The album, I Said I Love You First, chronicles their journey from the time before they met to falling in love and looking ahead to the future.

The first single, "Scared of Loving You," arrived aptly on Valentine's Day 2025.
  • "Scared of Loving You" delves into Gomez' fears and apprehensions about love, particularly her fear of losing Blanco rather than loving him. She reflects on past relationships and the hope of not repeating previous mistakes. In short, Gomez isn't afraid of love. She is, however, terrified that it might all go terribly wrong.
  • A lyric video accompanied the release, featuring intimate, home-video-style clips of Gomez and Blanco looking blissfully happy. Shot with a nostalgic, grainy filter, the video is the musical equivalent of flipping through an old scrapbook - if said scrapbook was meticulously curated and set to a professionally produced soundtrack.
  • Now, for those keeping score, this is hardly the first time Gomez and Blanco have made music together. Blanco was behind the scenes for Revival hits like "Same Old Love" and "Kill 'Em with Kindness" before they both teamed up with Tainy and J Balvin for the 2019 banger "I Can't Get Enough." In 2023, they worked on "Single Soon," a title that, in hindsight, is ironic given later developments.
  • Gomez wrote the lyrics. Benny Blanco and Finneas (also known as Billie Eilish's big brother and frequent collaborator) produced it. Both Gomez and Blanco have worked with Finneas before:
Finneas produced Selena Gomez' 2019 single "Lose You to Love Me," which topped the Billboard Hot 100. Finneas and Blanco co-produced Justin Bieber's song "Lonely," released in October 2020.
