Songfacts®:

  • "Copa Vacía" (empty glass) is a pop-reggaeton song where Shakira duets with Manuel Turizo about unrequited love. It's the first time the two Colombian artists have joined forces on a track.
  • Shakira and Manuel Turizo sing back-and-forth about the lack of affection from their romantic partners. Shakira urges her man to abandon his phone and embrace her irresistible allure. Turizo suspects his girl sensed a change and now perceives him differently. He describes the struggle of swimming against the current and seeks solace in the streets, yearning for someone who can fill the void within.
  • In the chorus, their voices merge harmoniously, conveying their shared longing.

Hace rato tengo sed de ti, yo no sé por qué
Quedo con ganas de más y queriendo beber de una copa vacía

    Translates as:
For some time now, I've been thirsting for you unsure of why.
Left desiring more, as if drinking from an empty cup
  • Shakira, Slow Mike, and Dallas K's production on "Copa Vacia" is sure to get you moving on the dance floor. The song's kinetic beat and sultry vocals will have you perreando in no time.
  • Miguel Andrés Martínez, better known as Slow Mike, is a Colombian rapper and producer who also has a credit on Sech's 2020 hit song "Relación."

American DJ-producer DallasK is best known for his work with Fifth Harmony ("Work From Home" and "Down") and Lauv ("Sad Forever" and "Who").
  • Shakira and Jaume de Laiguana co-directed the movie-like music video. Shakira portrays a pink-haired abandoned siren forgotten on the rocks whom Turizo rescues.

"The siren is a symbol that represents that part of me that was abducted and taken from a world where she belongs to a world where she doesn't belong," explained Shakira to Billboard. "A world she had to make enormous sacrifice to be in. A world where perhaps she lacked oxygen. But in the end, she returns to the sea because it's her destiny, just like I returned to Miami. (Laughs.) This siren was first abducted and then, for love, is next to this man, captive and locked up in a way. Sacrificing her own well-being and what is natural for her for love. And then she ends up thrown in the trash and surrounded by rats."

Shakira says the rats around her in the video are real. "Because believe me, I'm still surrounded by rats," she said. "But every time less and less. That has been a big part of what I've been doing this past year: cleaning the house, exterminating the rats."
