Songfacts®:

  • This Shania Twain track was penned by Mutt Lange, who also produced it. Although written from a female perspective, it is quite likely autobiographical because Lange and Twain met in June 1993 and married six months later. It's the only track on The Woman In Me that Shania didn't write or co-write. >>

  • The lyrics are loaded with car references like "I'm a classy little chassis" and "rev it up 'til your engine blows." Mutt Lange is no stranger to this form. He produced AC/DC's Back In Black album, with the track "You Shook Me All Night Long." The opening lines to that one:

    She was a fast machine
    She kept her motor clean
  • Shania Twain found her voice on her second album, The Woman In Me. Her debut album, released two years earlier, was filled with songs written by outside writers, and it didn't have much impact. But with Mutt Lange producing, she found a sound and style that suited her and appealed to a wide range of listeners.

"You Win My Love" was the fifth single from the album, released early in 1996 about a year after the album came out. It was her third #1 Country hit, following "Any Man Of Mine" and "(If You're Not in It for Love) I'm Outta Here!"

Twain followed this strategy of releasing lots of singles over a long stretch of time on her next album as well, Come On Over in 1997. Conventional wisdom was that issuing singles would hurt album sales, but they certainly didn't for Twain. The Woman In Me sold an amazing 12 million copies in America, and Come On Over did even better, selling 20 million.
  • The music video has a racing theme to go with all the automotive metaphors in the lyrics. We see Shania riding a go-kart and performing in front of a checkered flag. It was directed by Steven Goldmann, who shot her very first video: "What Made You Say That."
