Songfacts®:

  • Sharon Van Etten wrote this piano-driven song about her boyfriend, Zeke Hutchins, who used to be her drummer. She took their friendship to the next level by sharing with him a really intense tale from her past. Van Etten explained to Uncut magazine:

"We knew each other for years but didn't acknowledge we had feelings for each other, we were just friends. One day we met up for a drink and I told him the famous story that happened to me. It's changed our dynamic but in a very positive way... I could touch on something heavy, but it feels like more of a weight lifted than it does a burden."

Van Etten, who is very guarded in her personal life, has not provided details about this "famous story."
