Songfacts®:

  • "Nobody Knows" is a stripped-down folk-rock ballad that dives headfirst into the emotional whirlwind of lost love and vulnerability. You can almost hear the sound of hearts breaking as Shawn Mendes croons,

    When you're so in love
    And your souls touch
    But it's still not enough
    Where does it go?
    Nobody knows

It's the kind of question that's been plaguing poets and songwriters since, well, forever.
  • The rumor mill has been working overtime on this one, with speculation swirling that the song is about Mendes' on-again, off-again relationship with Camila Cabello. The pair, who first became close in 2014 and then dated between 2019 and 2021, took another stab at love for a few months in 2023. Although Mendes hasn't confirmed that the song is a direct reflection of their breakup, let's just say the timing is rather conspicuous. Not to mention, the lyrics hit a little too close to home for it to be purely coincidental. Take the line "flying too close to the sun." That phrase nods rather cheekily at Cabello's Instagram bio, which reads: "long, thick black hair turned white from flying too close to the sun."
  • Both Mendes and Cabello have a habit of turning their relationship's ups and downs into musical therapy. Over the years, they've penned several tracks that seem to chronicle their romance. Mendes has previously written songs like:

"Wonder" (2020), a reflection on their relationship during the pandemic.

"Summer of Love" (2021), a breezy nod to their time together.

"When You're Gone" (2022), written about their breakup, which Mendes ran by Cabello before releasing.
  • "Nobody Knows," like many of Mendes' songs, was co-written and co-produced with his go-to collaborator Scott Harris, along with Australian singer-songwriter Eddie Benjamin and LA-based pop wizard Mike Sabath. This songwriting dream team has worked on several of Mendes' emotionally charged singles, including "It'll Be Okay," "What The Hell Are We Dying For?" and "Why Why Why."
  • According to Mendes, "Nobody Knows" was born out of a "tough night" and, in true heart-on-sleeve fashion, was recorded in a single take. "I was dealing with some feelings, and we were having some whiskey, and we were in the studio," Mendes said in a social media video. As it turns out, the version fans hear is that very first run-through.

"We did it once, we did it together, and we did it live. And it was just kind of this beautiful captured moment in time," Mendes explained, proving that sometimes emotional rawness trumps a polished studio production.
  • In the music video, directed by Connor Brashier, Mendes and his friends do what heartbroken people have been doing for centuries: they dance, drink, and try to laugh through the pain. Mendes himself jokily described the video on Instagram as "Just 3 sweaty boys crying about love."
  • Mendes premiered "Nobody Knows" with a live performance at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, accompanied by Eddie Benjamin on electric guitar and Mike Sabath on drums.
