Wal-Mart stores banned this because of the line "Watch our children as they kill each other with a gun they bought at the Wal-Mart discount stores." The store refused to carry the album unless she changed the lyric. Crow refused.
Crow lost some sales because Wal-Mart would not carry the album, but the controversy gave the song much more exposure than it would have had otherwise.
Crow wrote this after reading stories about kids who bought guns in the sporting goods department of Wal-Mart. The store claimed they only sell guns to adults, and Crow was casting them in a bad light.
A different faster version of this song that omits the first controversial verse completely can be found in the 1996 movie Head Above Water starring Harvey Keitel and Cameron Diaz.
