Album: Sheryl Crow (1996)

Songfacts®:

  • Wal-Mart stores banned this because of the line "Watch our children as they kill each other with a gun they bought at the Wal-Mart discount stores." The store refused to carry the album unless she changed the lyric. Crow refused.
  • Crow lost some sales because Wal-Mart would not carry the album, but the controversy gave the song much more exposure than it would have had otherwise.
  • Crow wrote this after reading stories about kids who bought guns in the sporting goods department of Wal-Mart. The store claimed they only sell guns to adults, and Crow was casting them in a bad light.
  • A different faster version of this song that omits the first controversial verse completely can be found in the 1996 movie Head Above Water starring Harvey Keitel and Cameron Diaz. >>>
