Songfacts®:

  • The Simple Plan songwriting team of lead singer Pierre Bouvier and drummer Chuck Comeau wrote this song about the consequences of drunk driving. It's written from the perspective of someone who caused an accident; the pain won't go away and he keeps asking, "how can this happen to me?"

Bouvier explained what inspired the song: "These two friends of ours in high school went out drinking and driving and had an accident. The driver killed his best friend, who was in the passenger seat. Stuff like that makes you realize you have to be careful and realize you're not invincible."
  • This is an uncharacteristic ballad by Simple Plan that appears as the last track on their second album, Still Not Getting Any. The band didn't play any instruments on the track; Bill Sample played the piano and Bob Buckley arranged the string section. It was released as the album's third single.
  • The video for this song, which supports Mothers Against Drunk Driving, was directed by Marc Klasfeld, whose credits include Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" and Red Hot Chili Peppers' "The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie." It's very intense, portraying an accident scene where workers try to save a girl who was driving a car hit by a drunk driver. We then go back in time to see the crash; on impact her family is violently torn asunder, symbolic of their devastating loss.

The video was nominated for Best Editing and Best Cinematography at the MTV Video Music Awards and for Best Video at Canada's MuchMusic Video Awards. >>

  • When the album was released, this was originally a bonus track called "Untitled." When it got some radio play, the subtitle "How Can This Happen To Me" was added.

  • Mitchell Hansen from Grand Island, NebraskaI have the honor and pleasure of addressing persons in a recovery facility, on a monthly basis. • Frank Smith from Mesa Az.My boys CJ and Nolan were taken from us do to a drunk driver. My boys would sing this song over and over up until the accident. I had no clue the meaning of the song. We researched it and played at their funeral.

  • M from Toronto, OnSimple Plan wrote this song just after one of their friends was killed in a drunk driving accident.
  • Joel from Princeton-plainsboro, NjI can't help but start to cry when I play this song. I lost the love of my life due to a traffic accident. Very emotionsl. I rank this one up there with Some Devil By Dave Matthews
  • Iain from Medford, Maeven though i cant relate to it, when i was just 12 i heard this song on the radio and i didnt understand it, and when my cousin told me what it meant, the next time i listened to it, i cried so hard, i couldn't even breathe.
  • Jamie from Forrest, ArMy kid's and I were hit head on by a drunk driver the day before Halloween. My youngest daughter had to have plastic surgery and I almost lost my life, due to internal bleeding. This song brings back soo many memories of the night that I lay'd there in soo much pain and had to tell myself to not give up!I fought and I made it and thank God, my daughter did to!
  • Christine from Mission Viejo, CaSimple Plan wrote this for their friend, Ryan Hilliard (I think), who was drunk driving, got in an accident, and killed his friend. The guy went to my school and talked about his experience and how people shouldn't do drunk driving...
  • Jana from Prague, Czech Republicto Sadie, Midland, Canada: no, it's not about Patrick, they just used his nickname in the video. His name is Patrick Langlois. This song is great, btw. Sad, but amazing...
  • Nathan Ritz from Marengo , Ini start to cry when i hear this song because the day my dad left me i was listening to this song. he didnt even say he loved me or my brother before he left, he just hit my mom, got in his truck and left, and i never saw him again, i see him in public sometimes but its like he dont recognize me, i never really had a dad, my brothers have been the closest thing to a dad i have ever had
  • Kyle from Cuba, MoThe song brings emotion to me. The reason is that my aunt, uncle, and cousin were killed in a car accident almost 16 years ago. The reason it does bring emotion is that I was born on my aunt and uncle's 5th anniversary.
  • Melody from London, United KingdomHow heartless are you, Llyle????? I mean, have you ever stopped to consider the reasons why people drink in the first place? Sure, there isn't always a reason why you should feel sorry for them, but the sorrow and regret they express afterwards is so genuine I can't help but let it touch my heart. Maybe you'll only realise that when you lose someone close to you.
  • Llyle from London, United KingdomMelody, I know this is going to sound harsh, but in my opinion, this who drink drive bring everything upon themselves. It isn't really anything to feel sorry for. Sure, you can regret their actions and all, but their first mistake wasn't actually getting into the car, it was getting drunk in the first place. However, this song portrays a wide range of reactions in a very effective way.
  • Melody from London, United KingdomMy best friend was in an accident because of driving with too much alcohol. He felt almost exactly the way the song expresses. I'll never forget the way he said to me, "Why did it happen to me? How could it?" I feel kind of sorry for all those people who drink drive. To me, it's sort of like being mental. You don't know what you're really doing then when your sober again you realise how stupid it was: hence, 'how could this happen to me?'
  • Symbolic from Lansing, MiI relate to this song because I've put myself in a bad situation right now. So I just am screaming, how could this happen to me? I never thought I would do this would happen to me, as the song says, and I'm screaming, because it was all in my own hands. I feel the pain and frustration of the song. Regardless of the situation, when something happens and you want to turn back the clock, this song fits.
  • Cow from Nashville, MnI originally thought this song was about suicide... I see the error now. My friend nearly comitted suicide :(
  • Joey from Decatur, Inyea, i didnt think it was about Drunk driving accidents as well, i kind of thought it was a suicide thing as well, a person who is hurt and doesn't understand why(plus another hint why i thought it was suicide was the line "I'm sick of this life")
  • Bishbop from Lolville, Barbadosi know its about drink driving but i like listening to it to interpret it as like feeling ignored nd depressed and really fed up. thats how i listen to it even tho i know i know its not tha proper meaning.
  • Lauren from Kansas City, MoThis song is used for the thousands of drivers and teens who die in drunk driving related accidents. It was writen because Simple Plan lost a friend to a drunk driver.
  • Alexis from Virginia Beach, VaIf anyone has seen the news about the two girls who died in my hometown by the drunk illegal immagrant, Tessa and Allison, you might understand how much this song means to me. Tessa was a friend of mine and after she died this song hit me like a ton of bricks. My family works for the city and I see ALOT of drunk driving crashes. The pictures that the families and news channels DON'T see, the graphic ones and the one that scar your memory.
Drunk driving is the dumbest thing ever. It is the only thing in life you can truely 100% prevent. I ask none of you to do it EVER and not let anyone you know, or even don't know, do it either.

    R.I.P- Tessa Tranchant & Allison Kunhardt <33
  • Cassidy from Montreal, CanadaOkay, full story: Amber Doughty (1989-2000) died in 2000 due to a drunk driving hit-and-run, along with a friend, Dahlia I believe. When her father was called to identify the body he found that despite her being dead she appeared to be sleeping so he picked her up in order to hold her one last time and say his goodbyes. He was met with an unpleasant surprise when the hand cradling her head sunk through the skull to meet blood and bone. The back of her head had been entirely crushed. He crumpled and a nurse rushed to him to help him to a seat and wipe the blood off his hand as well as give him a glass of water. The young man who hit her (I know him only as Steiner) was convicted for hit-and-run with the help of a friend who had been called by him and who had been told that Steiner was "pissed off" for hitting the two girls as well as the friend who was to fix his car on the sly. They were unable to pin him for drunk driving (he'd been in hiding for around 24 hours)despite there being several witnesses to testify that he had been heavily inebriated when he left the same bar as Amber and Dahlia, and had been caught drunk at the wheel four other times. The prosecution was asking for at least ten years in prison, whereas Steiner (and the best drunk-driving defence lawyer in Canada)was aking for ten years community service. Steiner got 2 years in prison with probation:in the end he spent 31 days in jail. In short the girl's father angry and bereaved opened up a MADD chapter in the West Island of Montreal (Quebec, Canada)and has presentations telling his story in highschools in the area. It was at one of these presentations that a member of Simple Plan was inspired to write this song. I learnt this from one of the presentations myself though my memory of numbers is sketchy.
  • Kelsi from I-town(ionia, MiThe song is about one of their friends in high school got killed by a drunk driver....and died...it is really sad
  • Ollie from London, Englandyeah ... i thought this song was about someone commiting suicide ...

  • Allison from Veitnam, PaI like This Sight!!!!!!!!!!
  • Joel from Columbia, ScTo be honest I didn't know this song was about drunk driving. I was under the impression it was about the twin towers blowing up. I never saw the video so I will just have to take everybody's word that is about dui. Peace.
  • Jessie from Coffee County, TnThis song to me is so meaningful. Just don't drink and drive!!! If you do, you not only affect the person you crashed into, you affect your family, their family, and yourself. Simple Plan rocks!!!
  • Eric Cartman from What, United Statesok untitled (how could this happen to me?)is not the same as gc's hold on cuz there is a difference between drunk drivers and killing yourself not much but there is
  • Beans from Philadelphia, Pai love this song but every time i listen to it it makes me cry...
  • Amber from Anchorage, Akfor mr. central (this contest in my school) (like homecomeing/prom queen)some guys talent was movie making and he put together pictures of things that happened this year. part of it was the music video of this song. watching this made me think and the message was getting across to me very well. but at the time i wondered y this music video and song were included in the movie. i know some kids in my school got into a car accident and they all survived and r doing fine (thank god) but i dontno wut cause it. maybe he used this song because there was a drunk driver involved in the accident.
  • Amber from Anchorage, Akit IS about an auto accident, because Simple Plan wrote it and obviously they wouldn't be in a video (or let a video be produced) about their song when its being portrayed int he wrong way. u can think the meaning is whatever you want, but im just saying what it is reall about. if you go on their myspace website theres a video of them actually saying what the song is about.
  • Shannon from Honolulu, HiThis song means so much to me. My grandpa had been in a car accident from a drunk driver. He didn't make it. He was the closest one to me in my whole family. He was the most caring, and loving person in the world. Whenever he saw someone begging for money or food on the street my grandpa would buy him a meal of food and give him some money. It broke my heart in 2 when I heard the news about him. I was so sad and blamed myself for what had happened. Thinking why him? Why did it have to happen to him? What did he do wrong? Why couldn't it have been me instead? But after I heard this song it made me realized he's at a better place now watching over me like he did when he was here. I still feel like it's my fault but all I know is that I still love him and I know he'll always be in my heart. I hope this song can change your lives also.
  • Monika from Birmingham, AlI cry when i saw the video
  • Melissa from Toledo, OhJust to let you know, it's Untitled(How Could This Happen to Me) it's not can.
  • Pami from Charlotte, NcThe video gives the idea that it is an auto accident which is a good point; however, the lyrics could also be placed into other areas of one's life. It, to me, is the deperation of someone who is in so much emotional pain and they are at a loss as to how to make it go away. They want someone to see them, hear them...anyone and help them take the pain away - start over, a new life - forget all the past mistakes, because it hurts too much. "How could this happen to me?" It is amazing because it can happen to anyone. We all need to be more alert to our family and friends who just may feel this way and need our help.

  • Ashley Jade from Cleveland, GaIsn't this song kinda like that Good Charlotte song about suicide?
  • Shong from Wausau, Wiyeah i like this song...it's really emotional for people to listen too...it goes way deeper than just a car crash...it can be about something else...like to a love one dieing or thinking about the hard times...and it's the truth...dont drink and drive because it doesn't effect one family and effects two families or even more...so simple plan good job...rock on
  • Jeevan from Brampton, CanadaSimple Plan is a pretty cool band. I like their lyrics the most.
  • Melissa from Toledo, OhThis is one of the saddest songs I have ever heard. It gives a really good message that everyone should listen to. Even if you don't like Simple Plan you can still love the lyrics of this song and that's one of the best things about Simple Plan is that u can relate to their lyrics so much!
  • Veronica from Montreal, Utuntitled is sad and and the sme think happend to

  • Johnny from Rockland, Mathis was the song that got me into simple plan, the reason i bought the still not getting any cd. this is hands down an incredible song. no matter you think of simple plan this song stands apart from the rest. the music is beautiful and the video that goes along with it is very touching and eye opening. this will be one of my favorite slower songs of all time. thank you simple plan.
  • Ryan from Saskatoon, CanadaI think Simple Plan Rocks! People just don't get alternative music.. Some people aren't into Hardcore scream-your-balls-off crap. Simple Plan's got my vote! Simple Plan is coming back to Saskatoon.
  • Chet from Flagstaff, Azwho cares what they look like!?
    its a good song.
appreciate the song not the singer in the rain
  • Amanda from Mt. Pleasant, MiI realize that this song is about drunk driving, however, I think that it means different things to different people. My mom attempted suicide in August and just imagining what she was going through and knowing how made me feel, I could really relate to this song. I remember driving to and from the hospital listening to this song over and over, it really had a big impact on me and still does. Wondering what I may have done wrong or what I could have done diff. at some points feeling like my life was ending and wondering "how could this happen to me".
  • Jillian from Portland, TxThis song is very strong. It shows a lot of emotion. I cried so hard when I first saw it. I am so anti-drunk driving and anti-drugs its not even funny. Losing a friend to drunk driving is not fun.
  • Kelsi from Ionia, MiMy friend just resently died in a car accident relating a drunk driver and it has been very hard on my school. my health teacher is also helping me talk to the stundents about drunk drivers. my school has meetings every month just to remind us to not drink or drink and drive. you can also help your own school just talk to your health teacher and they will want to help make something i did! some of the students at my school have said no to drinking and i also have. i will never put a bottle o liquor to my mouth!

  • Takashi from Tokyo, JapanTHis was played during a slideshow at my sister's school... it was on Drunk driving. And plus, they showed "Requiem For A Dream".
  • Chelsea from Greer, Sci can really understand this song because my sis (who would be turin 18 in this year)was killed by an idot driven on the wrong side of the road while she was given her friend a ride to school and it makes me think about how so many peple have lost there lifes becoase of idots who shoudnt even be driven
  • **megz** from Stanny, AustraliaHow deep is this song, not that many songs have such a strong effect as this one. I love it and it also relates as a close friend died in a drink driving acident.I love sp and will be seeing them in concert on the 2 october 2005 i cant' wait. Love u guys
  • Skye from Rockhampton, AustraliaUntitled is a very affective poem my stepdad nearlly killed himself by drink driving.
simple plan is the best band that i have come across they are not affraid to express their feelings
  • Sadie from Midland, Canadaokay u no patrick there good friend that is on there dvd patrick cunningham the video was NOT about him right?
  • Edward from Garner, NcThere's...more of a message too this song, it seems...it may be against drunk driving...but, it also sends more messages across...something they not of intentionally put it...it's like...they're saying..."How could I of screwed up? My life was perfect...? How could it of happened too me?"...That was the best message I got...the message I got was that no matter how young or old...how fat or skinny...how perfect or unperfect your life is...you will always make a mistake...and some mistakes you will never, ever forget...some mistakes will hurt...really hurt...some mistakes will be like a torrent of pain, continuously washing over your body...like I said...this song maybe about drunk driving...so before anyone critizies me for it, I am not saying that is what they are saying, I am saying that is what I got out of it.
  • Lia from Adelaide, AustraliaI think that this song has really gotton a message across. When it was released everyone at school and everyone that i know was talking about it and that drink driving is wrong. I am strongly against drink driving because i know a couple of people who have been victims of this. i love this song and the first time i heard it and saw the video clip i got really emotional. This song has had a major effect on people and hopefully now people will be more aware of the consequences.
    xoxo
