Songfacts®:

  • The song title comes from Minnie Riperton, a 1970s R&B singer whose vocal range spanned five-octaves; Riperton's ability to enunciate in the high registers set her apart from most other singers in her era. Alexis told NME: "We were talking about her, because I'm always in awe of her stratospheric singing style. We ended up creating this character – Minnie Ripper – and those two words next to each other felt like something that should be on the record."
  • The song's hook, horn stabs and fall on the backbeat were all lifted from the Minnie Ripperton track "Les Fleurs."
