Songfacts®:

  • The song title stands for "Approaching Original Violence." Frontman Corey Taylor explained to Kerrang!: "The album as a whole is the story of the last four years for this band, so AOV is basically about looking at each other and dealing with a lot of the issues that we've had, to try to bury those hatchets, so we can get back on our feet. Because you can't stand together until you figure out what the issue is. You have to get on the same page to be a move forward."

"It's just really about finding a way to stand on the common ground and not only stand on it, but take that territory back," he added, "and guard it as your own."
