Songfacts®:

  • "Falling is easy," Staind frontman Aaron Lewis sings on this track. "It's getting back up that becomes the problem."

The song is addressed to someone who blames others for their failings and won't take control of their life.
  • "Falling" was the second single from Staind's fifth album, Chapter V, following "Right Here." Staind was one of the hottest bands of the early '00s, thanks to songs like "It's Been Awhile" and "Epiphany," but by 2005 their fanbase had diminished. The album still went to #1, but sales were relatively disappointing. The group slid further on their next two albums, at which point Aaron Lewis fired up a solo career, switching genres to become a country singer. Staind didn't break up, but they didn't release another new song until 2023.
  • The music video takes place at a pee wee football game where the parents and coaches are way too involved. A benchwarmer is pressed into action, and when a fumble lands at his feet, the kid runs it into the endzone... the wrong one! The adults all lose their minds while the kid celebrates.

The video was directed by Cooper Johnson, who based it on one of his real-life adventures in youth sports. Johnson was on the basketball team but rode the bench. In garbage time, the coach put him in and Johnson scored... on the other team's basket.
