Songfacts®:

  • Winwood faced accusations of "selling out" when this song debuted in a Michelob commercial. The singer granted the brewing company permission to use a track from Roll With It in order to gain tour sponsorship, but he didn't write "Don't You Know What The Night Can Do?" specifically for the ad. Winwood explained in a 1990 biography, "They started putting the commercial on the TV before the single was out. It looked like I had written a beer jingle!" >>

  • Winwood wrote this seductive tune with Will Jennings, his frequent co-writer throughout the '80s. Romantic nights are a staple of Jennings' lyrics - he also wrote words for the Oscar-winning duet "Up Where We Belong."
  • This was a #1 hit on Billboard's Rock chart.
  • Several other artists teamed with Michelob as part of "The Night Belongs to Michelob" campaign in the late-'80s, including Eric Clapton, Genesis, Phil Collins, Wang Chung, Foreigner, Ray Charles, and even Frank Sinatra with a spin on "The Way You Look Tonight."
