Songfacts®:

  • Gruff Rhys sings here of a child who talks to his pet turtles, Venus and Serena, as he's unable to communicate with his father.

So why were the titular pets named after the tennis stars, Venus and Serena Williams? Gruff Rhys explained to Q magazine: "The song was about two pet turtles named after them, which sounds ridiculous, but it's true. They were the people of the moment, household names, and some people were calling their kids after them. I'm not really interested in tennis."
