Songfacts®:

  • "Punkrocker" is an electropop-spiked hymn to individuality. The "punk rocker" in the song serves as a metaphor for authenticity and staying true to oneself, rather than engaging in rebellion merely for the sake of it.
  • Teddybears are a Swedish band known for wearing bear heads (not real ones) when they perform. They first released this song on their 2000 album Rock'n'Roll Highschool, but it wasn't until 2006 that "Punkrocker" really strutted into the spotlight. That year, Teddybears re-recorded the song with the shirtless, sinewy high priest of punk himself, Iggy Pop, for their album Soft Machine. That version was an underground hit in the US.
  • Teddybears' Joakim Åhlund has spoken about their collaborations with wide-ranging talents like Cee-Lo Green, the B-52's, and Robyn. But even among all that musical polyamory, working with Iggy Pop stood out. "All those people are our heroes," Åhlund told Riff. "I don't mean any disrespect to the others, but Iggy Pop, that's a proud moment for me."
  • The Iggy-fied "Punkrocker" was used in a 2007 Cadillac advertising campaign.
  • In 2025, the song saw a resurgence in streaming and public attention after playing in the closing sequence and over the end credits of the DC Universe film Superman. It called back to an earlier exchange in the movie where Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) insists she's "more punk rock" than her buttoned-up beau Clark Kent (David Corenswet).

Director James Gunn said he chose the track for its thematic resonance with the film's core message about kindness and authenticity.
  • Iggy Pop gave his first live performance of "Punkrocker" on July 26, 2025, at the Project Pabst festival in Portland, Oregon. This live debut came after the song's Superman resurgence, with Iggy Pop closing out his set by dedicating the performance to the iconic hero.
