Album: Sandbox (2025)

Songfacts®:

  • Tyson Ritter, the lead singer and lyricist for The All-American Rejects, was just 18 when they released their first album in 2002. The songs he wrote, "Swing, Swing" in particular, were mostly about what many teenage boys are concerned about: girls.

That was the subject of many of their songs throughout the 2000s, but in 2025 the wizened Ritter wrote "Sandbox," which is more of a think piece. The song looks at how children often play war games with toy soldiers in the sandbox when they're little. When adults play these games, the stakes are much higher.

"This song is a tongue bursting through cheek, just the same way all our songs always had a bit of a wink and a goose," he told Variety. "But there is a message in it if you listen to it."
  • In the music video, the band perform the song on a kids' show accompanied by puppets that turn evil and attack them. It gets horror-movie bloody as the guys run for their lives.

The video was directed by Joseph Kahn, one of the most prolific and creative auteurs in the form. His other work includes "Toxic" by Britney Spears and "Look What You Made Me Do" by Taylor Swift.
  • "Sandbox," released in 2025, was a return to action for The All-American Rejects. In 2024 they released a cover of "Flagpole Sitta," but they hadn't released an original song since 2020. They said the song would be the title track of their next album, their first since 2012.
  • The All-American Rejects found a novel way to promote this song. In May 2025 they included it in the sets of their House Party Tour, a series of free shows in backyards throughout America. When the band was in their heyday it was before the iPhone, so fans actually watched the show. And while many artists bristle at the sight of the audience watching through screens, the Rejects encouraged it became all those videos got posted to social media. After the House Party Tour the set off as opening act for The Jonas Brothers.
