  • Amber Bain, known professionally as The Japanese House, is an English indie-pop musician from Buckinghamshire. She has been passionate about music since she was young; her father nurtured her love of music by teaching her how to play the guitar.

In 2012, Bain began her musical career under the moniker The Japanese House. She quickly caught the attention of Matty Healy, the lead singer of The 1975, who offered to help produce her music under his Dirty Hit label.

"Sunshine Baby" is a track from her second album, In the End It Always Does. Matty Healy joins her for the bridge and outro.
  • Bain dedicates this nostalgic piece of dream pop to her beloved pet pooch. The song is a deeply personal and vulnerable exploration of the search for comfort and meaning in relationships. The lyrics are raw and honest - they speak to the universal human need for connection and belonging.

"'Sunshine Baby' is my nickname for my dog, and my ex and I always used to lay on the beach together being sunshine babies," Bain said. "The chorus is kind of a submission to the end of our relationship, but singing it in a positive light. There's a transience in every part of a relationship, and in the circle of everything it comes back around."
  • Bain references the album title on the second verse.

  • Bain co-produced the song with producer and engineer Chloe Kraemer and with Healy's 1975 bandmate George Daniel. Throughout the album, Bain, who identifies as gay, worked closely with Chloe Kraemer, an experience she described as transformative. The creative space they shared fostered an unspoken connection rooted in their understanding as individuals navigating marginalized genders.

"I'd never worked with a woman or queer person in that way before," she revealed.
  • Sheila Johansson directed the accompanying live performance video. Swedish director Johansson was the first woman to win both Best Director and Best New Director at the Swedish Roy Awards, the most prestigious advertising awards in Sweden.
  • In the End It Always Does draws inspiration from Bain's personal journey, recounting significant events following her 2019 debut album, Good At Falling. It encapsulates her initial move to Margate, a place that left an indelible imprint on her path.

The lyrics also touch upon Bain's involvement in a polyamorous relationship, exploring the complexities and dynamics of navigating multiple connections simultaneously. Additionally, the album delves into the gradual dissolution of these relationships, unraveling the intricacies of emotions and experiences intertwined with their inevitable decline.

"These two people were together for six years and I met them and then we all fell in love at the same time – and then one of them left," she shared. "It was a ridiculously exciting start to a relationship. It was this high and then suddenly I'm in this really domestic thing, and it's not like there was other stuff going on – it was lockdown."
