Songfacts®:

  • "Every Day Is The Worst Day Of My Life" is a bleak refrain dressed up in sunny, 1970s-style harmonies. The title is the song's only lyric, cutting straight to the gloom surrounding brothers Brian and Michael D'Addario when they wrote it.

The band were stuck in New York during lockdown, newly dropped by their record label and left wondering what to do next. "Even before COVID, we didn't have much of a social life," Brian told Mojo. "Then lockdown happened and in midtown New York the misery was on full display: no tourists, just cops and homeless people. We were thinking: why are we here? Why aren't we in a sunny field in Pennsylvania? On top of that, we weren't doing particularly well. We had been dropped from our label and we were floundering."
  • The track is part of The Lemon Twigs' fourth album, Everything Harmony, which shifted toward quieter, ballad-heavy arrangements compared to their earlier rock-driven output. The contrast between the miserable words and the bright, idyllic backing vocals drives the joke home: if life is going to be awful, you might as well put a catchy melody under it.
  • The accompanying video, directed by New York filmmaker, animator, and camera operator Hilla Eden, pairs clips of zoo animals with shots of the band wandering around New York City. Eden also co-directed the video for the album's lead single "Corner Of My Eye" alongside Brian D'Addario.
