Songfacts®:

  • The Lemon Twigs are the brothers Brian and Michael D'Addario. When one of their grandmothers passed away after developing Alzheimer's, the experience found its way into this song. In "New To Me," Brian D'Addario tells his girlfriend if he ever becomes so senile he forgets who she is, don't try to remind him because he'll just fall for her again.

"You almost forget who they were and try to go along with their new way of perceiving the world, to make it easier for them," Brian told Mojo magazine. "But in New To Me, the person knows they are going to get Alzheimer's, so they're saying to their loved one, 'Don't try to make me recognize you, and we can fall in love all over again.' It's an overly romanticized take on a very troubling thing, but it was my way of dealing with it."
  • And when you hear me at night 'neath the moon and stars fight
    You're only hearing a reflection
And when you hold my hand and you tell me who I am
    I'll find my heart's connection

The doctors told the D'Addario brothers that if their grandmother didn't recognize them, don't correct her, just go along with it.

"Our grandpa is this tall, handsome guy," Michael remembered to the Guardian. "When he visited her, she didn't recognize him, but was like, 'Hey, hot stuff!' It was emotionally bittersweet for him."
  • "New to Me" concludes The Lemon Twigs' fourth album, Everything Harmony. The sibling duo centered the record around a collection of ballads composed by Brian D'Addario. Initially recorded in Manhattan's Music Building, the album's acoustic nature proved incompatible with the space. To capture the desired sound, the brothers relocated the recording sessions to Hyde Street Studios in San Francisco.
