Songfacts®:

  • On "Demons In Your Choir," The Red Clay Strays tackle the uncomfortable truth that not every voice claiming to lead you toward the light is necessarily headed in that direction. Written from the perspective of someone watching a loved one be corrupted by bad influences masquerading as righteous ones, the "choir" metaphor is key: a choir is a place of worship and harmony, but if filled with the wrong voices - "demons" - it becomes a vehicle for spiritual ruin rather than salvation.
  • The Red Clay Strays vocalist Brandon Coleman cautions that appearances can be misleading and that things wrapped in the language of faith, virtue, or righteousness aren't always what they seem.

It ain't a church just 'cause it feels good
It ain't an angel 'cause it's got wings

The track acts as a metaphor for modern influence and manipulation. The way people can be quietly steered astray without realizing it.
  • The Red Clay Strays frontman Brandon Coleman wrote the song with his two brothers, Matthew Coleman and Dakota Coleman.

Matthew Coleman is not an official band member, but he is one of the Red Clay Strays' principal songwriters, alongside guitarist Drew Nix. He also serves as the band's photographer, videographer, social media manager, and music video director.

Dakota Coleman contributes less frequently as a songwriter, though he also co-wrote the band's country-rock ballad "Wanna Be Loved."
  • The Red Clay Strays released "Demons In Your Choir" on April 23, 2026, as the third single from their third album, Grateful. The album was produced by Dave Cobb, who also helmed the band's sophomore effort, Made By These Moments, as well as landmark records by Chris Stapleton (Traveller), Jason Isbell (Southeastern), and Sturgill Simpson (Metamodern Sounds in Country Music). Grateful was recorded between Cobb's home studio in Savannah and the historic RCA Studio A in Nashville.
  • The track includes a gospel choir led by Shannon Sanders, who has also worked with India.Arie and the Fisk Jubilee Singers.
  • The video was released simultaneously with the single. Directed by Matthew Coleman and filmed in Mobile, Alabama, it depicts the band performing in an empty, darkened church. After the first verse, the lights come on and a gospel choir joins the band, creating a powerful visual parallel to the song's themes.
  • After winning Group of the Year at the 61st Academy of Country Music Awards on May 17, 2026, in Las Vegas, dethroning Old Dominion's eight-year reign, The Red Clay Strays performed "Demons In Your Choir" live with a full gospel choir onstage.
  • Grateful is the third and final chapter of a thematic trilogy. "Moment of Truth was a big album about having faith in dark times, looking to a higher power and Made By These Moments focused on realizing those dark times that you were having to have faith through, which made you who you are. You made it through when you didn't think you would," Brandon Coleman explained. "And now we're at a point where we're grateful. Looking to God in whatever situation you're in is a denominator in all of the albums."
  • "Demons In Your Choir" is the opening track on Grateful. Brandon Coleman said it was a "good way to start" the record, exemplifying a change in sound for the band compared to their previous work. The 11-track album is described as songs "built to spill out of dance halls on Saturday night and fill church steeples on Sunday morning."
