Songfacts®:

  • "Bones" is a lively little meditation on the idea that a person's true self is revealed when they're not being observed. The essence of who you are "running through your bones" is who you are at home, away from outside influences.
  • The Sherlocks created the track with a sense of freedom and experimentation in the studio, allowing themselves to try out unconventional ideas and "mad tuning," resulting in a song with multiple bass tracks and a lively, energetic feel.

"There are not many guitars, it's a lot of synths layered up," lead singer Kiaran Crook told The Sun. "It's pretty much a drum and bass song that we had to add an indie rock twist too so it sounded like a Sherlock song. At one point, there's about four different bass parts at once; it's pretty mental."
  • The Sherlocks released "Bones" in November 2024 as part of the lead-up to their fifth album, Everything Must Make Sense. Kiaran Cook told The Sun:

"We did the album at Red City Recordings. It's a great studio just outside of the Northern Quarter, in Manchester, which is a great place to do an album. Not that many of the songs were finished before we got to the studio. It could have been a disaster, but it adds excitement to the process."
  • Helping to keep the mayhem in check was producer David Radahd-Jones, who had already steered their previous album, People Like You & Me, to a #4 spot on the UK chart. The band credited Radahd-Jones with pushing their sound to new heights during these sessions.
