Songfacts®:

  • The Veronicas slam the conceited celebrity lifestyle in "Popular." The Origliasso sisters mimic arrogant A-listers throughout the track, dropping lyrics such as: "Boys and girls pretend to know me, they try so hard. And I get what I want, my name is my credit card. Don't try to hate me because I am so popular."

Lisa Origliasso elaborated on the song's subject matter to Access All Areas: "When we were writing it, it started out as a bit of a joke. We were taking the piss out of the celebrity lifestyle, especially the 'it girls' in LA, we were having a bit of fun with it… We loved it, it's a bit tongue in cheek and a bit of fun. It's a great song to rock out live to."
  • Jess Origliasso raps the verses of "Popular," a feat she finds quite humorous, as she explained to the Herald Sun: "I'm rapping! I'm doing it for all the unrhythmic white chicks in Australia! With a really thick Australian accent!"
  • The song features on Hook Me Up, The Veronicas' second album. The record sees the Origliasso sisters divert away from the pop-punk ambiance of their debut album, The Secret Life Of…, in order to explore the electro-pop genre. This new sound is particularly reflected in the synth-heavy "Popular."
