Songfacts®:

  • Pete Townshend wrote this in New York during The Who's 2002 tour. It was written in memory of bass player John Entwistle, who died on June 27, 2002. Entwistle loved red wine and often drank it past it's prime, which is where the lyrics for the song came from. >>

  • Johnny from Los Angeles, CaWow! I didn't know this was a tribute! And I've had it on The Who: Then And Now 1964-2004 for a while. So nice of them to sing this to John.
  • Laura from Spencerport, NyIt's a very nice tribute. If yal are big Who fans, you might want to get the dvd of The Who live at the Royal Albert Hall from 2000 where Pete adds on some new lyrics at the end of this song (John was still alive here, obviously), and then, after John passed away, he changed those lyrics on the dvd of The Who live in Boston from 2002. What a change in the lyrics, too. It gets to me every time I watch those two songs from the different concerts. Check into it.
  • Vincent from St. Davids, EnglandThis song is beautiful. It's the best thing Pete & Roger could have done for their old mate John Entwistle.
