Songfacts®:

  • Outsider is a lyrically dark album, but its lead single "The Mountain" is one of its more hopeful tracks. Speaking with ABC Radio, drummer Neil Sanderson explained: "The Mountain" is about "waking up to your own reality, and having no choice but to face your own circumstances, for better or for worse."

"For some people, that's striving to be the best," he continued. "And for other people, that's just having the courage to wake up and put one foot in front of the other and stay off of rock bottom."

"There's just an element of hope in there. It's not just all dismal. Some days are gonna be dark, and you gotta look towards the light, and just know that there is gonna be better days ahead," added lead vocalist Matt Walst. "And I think we really touched on that in 'The Mountain.'"
  • "The Mountain" reached the summit of the Mainstream Rock Songs airplay chart, giving Three Days Grace their 13th #1 single on the tally. This equaled the record set by Van Halen, which they had held since 1998.
