Songfacts®:

  • "Nashville CA/L.A. Tennessee" was inspired by Tim McGraw's eldest daughter Gracie's move to Los Angeles.

If God made the two cities closer, I'd be right beside you
But then where would the Grand Canyon be?
I'll meet you in Nashville, California or L.A., Tennessee

The song is a tribute to a father's love for his daughter. It's a reminder that even though distance can be a challenge, love can always find a way.
  • The track has roots in McGraw's old SUV. "I have this 19-year-old Cadillac Escalade that I can't get rid of," he laughed to Billboard. "We call it the Griswold Family cruiser. I'd ripped all the seats out of it and loaded all of Gracie's stuff into it."
  • McGraw and Gracie did a road trip from Nashville to LA to move her to the City of Angels. "We spent about four days traveling, staying in great spots and doing carpool karaoke, singing songs together," McGraw recalled. "She's a fantastic singer. We got to LA late at night, movin' her into her place, moving boxes in. By that time, she was ready to get rid of me. Finally, she said, 'Daddy, you have to go,' so I gave her a big hug and I just cried like a baby."
  • McGraw can't bear to part with his old Cadillac Escalade. He told Apple Music the vehicle has "so many memories in it. Hauling kids to football games and basketball games, softball games, baseball games, all that stuff."
  • McGraw wrote "Nashville CA/L.A. Tennessee" alongside his longtime acoustic guitarist Bob Minner and with Lori McKenna. Massachusetts singer-songwriter Lori McKenna also plays a supporting-vocal role on the track.

In 2004, singer-songwriter Mary Gauthier brought Lori McKenna's Bittertown album to the attention of McGraw's wife, Faith Hill. After giving it a listen, Hill decided to delay the release of her 2005 album Fireflies in order to replace certain tracks with cover versions of songs by McKenna. This led to Hill and McGraw becoming strong supporters of McKenna's work. The following year they invited McKenna to join them on tour - quite an endorsement of her musical talents.

Since then, McKenna has worked with McGraw in a songwriting capacity regularly throughout the years, most notably on the country star's 2015 Grammy-winning hit, "Humble and Kind."
  • Tim McGraw co-produced the track alongside his regular producer, Byron Gallimore.
  • Gallimore also played keyboards, piano and electric guitar. The other musicians are:

    Paul Bushnell: bass guitar
Shannon Forrest: drum programming, drums, percussion
    Charlie Judge: keyboards, piano
    Jamie Muhoberac: keyboards, piano
    Dan Dugmore: steel guitar
    Ilya Toshinskiy: banjo
    Adam Schoenfeld: electric guitar
    Michael Landau: electric guitar
    B. James Lowry: acoustic guitar
    Sol Littlefield – electric guitar
