Songfacts®:

  • Touch & Go is a British jazz-pop ensemble founded in 1998 by television composer David Lowe, veteran radio presenter and music journalist Charlie Gillett, and co-founder of Oval Music, Gordon Nelki. The other band members are vocalist Vanessa Lancaster and multi-instrumentalist James Lynch.

Within a few days of forming, Lowe had put together "Would You…?" using a sampled vocal clip and trumpet jazz licks played by Lynch over a Latin rhythm. The song was a Top 3 hit in the UK in 1998. It later reached The Top 10 in Denmark, Greece, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Spain and Switzerland, among other countries.
  • The song samples a woman's voice exploring themes of attraction and desire taken from a 1978 psychological study titled "Gender Differences in Receptivity to Sexual Favors."
  • "Would You…?" was used as the theme music for the British comedy-drama program As If, which ran 2001-2004. It also showed up in the 2000 American documentary series G String Divas and played in Miss World 1998 during the runway pass of a group of contestants.
  • The song was Touch & Go's only hit in the UK. They released an album, I Find You Very Attractive, which included three more singles: "Straight To Number One," "So Hot," and "Tango In Harlem," all of which are still widely played on radio in Eastern Europe. Apple chose "Straight...to Number One" to launch the iTunes site in the US.
  • In 2023, Campbell x Alcemist released a single titled "Would You (Go To Bed With Me?)" with vocals by Caity Baser. Their song is a drum and bass update of Touch & Go's track. It spent 10 weeks on the UK Singles chart, peaking at #29.
