Songfacts®:

  • This Latin-tinged song finds Pat Monahan singing of a remote island where he falls in love with a mermaid. The Train vocalist teamed up with the Norwegian production duos Espionage and Stargate to pen the song. Monahan also collaborated with Espionage on the hit singles "Hey Soul Sister" and "Drive By" but it was the first time he'd worked with Stargate.
  • The mermaid is a sea creature of legend with a human upper part and a fishtail for the lower body. The dugong and seal have both been suggested as origins for the myth. Here are a couple more songs in our database that tell similar tales of a human falling in love with a mermaid:

    "The Mermaid" by Shel Silverstein.

"Girl In The Sea" by No More Kings.
