Songfacts®:

  • This is the debut solo single by X-Factor judge and former N-Dubz singer Tula Contostavlos, who records under the name of Tulisa. The rave-pop anthem was produced by STL, a production duo which was founded by her former boyfriend and N-Dubz bandmate Richard 'Fazer' Rawson. It was premiered on Chris Moyle's BBC Radio 1 show on March 23, 2012 and released on May 6, 2012 through Island Records and All Around The World.
  • According to Fazer, the song is about mistakes made during youth. He said the dance tune has, "a great message behind it: Forgive us for what we have done, 'cause we are young. That's it. Simple!"
  • The song's music video was filmed on March 2, 2012 in Miami, and sees Tulisa performing against a backdrop of graffiti and abandoned cars. We see her getting up to all sorts of mischief, including being escorted away from an exhibition after scribbling the name she has dubbed herself, "The Female Boss," across a work of art.
  • Tulisa told The Guardian that this slice of upbeat dance-pop had to be her first solo single, because, "lyrically, musically, it had to be like - boom - here I am, do you know what I mean? And the music had to represent me. So even though it's got that urban edge, it's got an Ibiza edge too, because I'm an Ibiza baby."
  • The song was originally titled "We Are Young." It was hastily given a new moniker to avoid confusion with the Fun single of that name, which was climbing the UK charts at the time.
