Songfacts®:

  • "La Rossa" is Peter Hammill at his most gloriously desperate. The song takes us inside the mind of a man hopelessly in love with a woman who has been a platonic friend for years.
  • Consumed by romantic and sexual longing, Hammill lays his feelings completely bare, portraying himself as needy, vulnerable, and utterly incapable of hiding his devotion. His anguished, passionate vocal delivery captures every contradiction in the relationship. He wants the woman desperately, yet his desire remains tangled up with dependence, platonic history, and the fear of humiliation.
  • The title translates from Italian as "the red-haired one." Hammill explained to Uncut that the idea struck during a tour of Italy, where band members and crew spotted a striking red-haired woman. "So in the Italian way, red things are 'La Rossa,'" he recalled. "Rather like Ferraris as well, of course."
  • "La Rossa" appears on Still Life, Van der Graaf Generator's sixth album, released in April 1976. Clocking in at nearly ten minutes, the track gives Hammill plenty of room to explore the less dignified side of romantic obsession.
