Songfacts®:

  • "The One" is a single that Texas-born Vanessa Olivarez recorded shortly after reaching the Top 12 in the second season of American Idol. It's a song of unrequited love for someone who's moved on from an old relationship. In the song, Olivarez is still holding on. She sings that she wishes she could be "the one" for her former lover.
  • In her Songfacts interview (as a member of Granville Automatic), Olivarez said she was contacted shortly after Idol by Canadian songwriters Dave Pickell and James Collins (who also acts professionally) and invited to Canada. She met the duo there, and they all wrote "The One" in Vancouver together. They recorded it on the same day, along with two other songs, including "I'm in Love with My Best Friend's Ex" (which is the B-side to "The One").
