Songfacts®:

  • Vince Gill married fellow recording artist Amy Grant in 2000. During this autobiographical song, he talks about how his wife's Christian walk is so much stronger than his, and honors her nonjudgmental attitude regarding his lack of faith.
  • Gill told ABC Radio the song highlights the differences between him and his wife. "That's kind of what the song's about, as much as it is lifting her up," he said. "It's about being vulnerable enough to say, 'She may be that - me, not so much.'"

"To me the real beauty of that song is the light that I paint her in," he added. "But the, golly, how is the right way to say this? Maybe the emotion comes from the vulnerability that I give myself."
  • Gill wrote the song solo for his 15th studio album, Okie. A proud Oklahoman, the singer honored his native state by naming the record after a term used to describe a native of Oklahoma.
  • Justin Niebank co-produced all the Okie tracks with Gill. The producer also co-helmed the musician's previous album, Down to My Last Bad Habit.
  • Gill snagged his 22nd Grammy when this song won Best Country Solo Performance at the 2021 ceremony.
  • When my Amy prays
    That's when my hands raise

So what does Amy Grant think of the song? Turns out she's moved to tears. "I've never said this, but it's the thing that kind of puts a lump in my throat," she told Entertainment Tonight. "Faith has always been easy to me. For years I've asked Vince, 'Does anything make your hands go like this?'" Grant continued, raising her hands in the air.

"So I hear it and I'm like, 'Okay, you got me - I should pray more,'" she added with a laugh.
