Songfacts®:

  • This was written by the Canadian songwriter David Foster along with his wife at the time, Linda Thompson, and former Chicago vocalist Peter Cetera. Considered the "We Are The World" of the 1990s, "Voices That Care" was used to raise money to show support for the troops in Operation Desert Storm, an international effort to liberate Kuwait.
  • Featured vocalists on this song in order of appearance: Ralph Trevasant, Randy Travis, Celine Dion (back when she had a French-Canadian accent), Peter Cetera, Bobby Brown, Brenda Russell, Jani Lane (of Warrant), Luther Vandross, Garth Brooks, Kathy Mattea, Matthew and Gunnar Nelson, Michael Bolton, Little Richard, The Pointer Sisters, Will Smith, Mark Knopfler and Warren Wiebe. Kenny G performed on the track, and many actors and sports figures were also in the choir.
  • The demo was recorded by Warren Wiebe, who was a highly regarded session vocalist on the West Coast. Sadly, he committed suicide in 1998. >>>

  • R from Orange County, CaAfter Brenda Russell is Jani Lane, former lead singer of the rock band Warrant (died in 2011), one of the best of the 80's rockers. He re-appears toward the end after Mark Knopfler's guitar solo and Bobby Brown, but before Celion Dion's second appearance.
  • Sara from Silver Spring, MdIt's Magic Johnson, sorry and Michael Jordan (NBA All Stars). Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits is the guitarist.
I think David Foster should redo this with since its been a decade since this song was released.
  • Sara from Silver Spring, MdThe video for this is not available on DVD perhaps because it was a special benefit. It is on YouTube but the comments aren't great.
It's great to see all these celebrities together. The choir included Wayne Gretszky (David Foster's favorite hockey player), Kenny Roger, Al Jarreau, Melissa Manchester, Al Jarreau, Meryl Streep, Kevin Costner, Whoopi Goldberg, The Fresh Prince (Will Smith) who also did a rap during the song, Michael Johnson, Helen Reddy, Paul Anka, Richard Gere and many more.
