Songfacts®:

  • "By A Monster's Hand" spins a nightmarish tale of a serial killer who commits unspeakable acts of decapitation and mutilation. The killer is a macabre and twisted character who dances with the dead and wears body parts as accessories.
  • Volbeat often incorporate dark themes and storytelling into their music. Their 2016 track "Mary Jane Kelly" pays chilling tribute to Jack the Ripper's final known victim, while "Black Rose" takes a deep dive into self-destruction and shattered dreams. "By A Monster's Hand" continues the tradition, offering yet another haunting exploration of the human psyche at its most deranged.
  • The music video, starring Jonathan Neal, brings this unsettling vision to life with a mix of eerie storytelling and classic Volbeat performance footage. Directed by Adam Rothlein and produced by Ghost Atomic - the same team behind "Shotgun Blues," "Leviathan," and "Die To Live" - the video makes sure that whatever nightmares the song doesn't induce, the visuals will.
  • "By A Monster's Hand" is the lead single for Volbeat's God Of Angels Trust album. Frontman Michael Poulsen began writing in the summer of 2024, working alongside drummer Jon Larsen and bassist Kaspar Boye Larsen. Within three weeks, they had half an album mapped out. Volbeat hit the studio in the fall with longtime producer Jacob Hansen, and to keep the music sounding urgent and immediate, they recorded live. They played as few takes as possible before moving from one song to the next, wrapping the whole thing up in just 13 days. It was the fastest record the band has ever created.
  • The song topped Billboard's Mainstream Rock Airplay chart. It was Volbeat's 11th visit to the summit; they first reached #1 in July 2012 with "Still Counting."
