Songfacts®:

  • In this emotional duet, Zach Bryan and Maggie Rogers express anger, sadness, and grief over the loss of a love they once believed in. They regret wasting so many dawns on the romance and demand back all the days they dedicated to their lover.
  • Both artists seek a refuge to heal after their breakups. Bryan mentions his mother's home, mourning her loss.

And by the time she wakes
I'll be halfway to my mama's home
    It just dawned on me
Life is as fleeting as the passin' dawn

Bryan's mother DeAnn passed away from a heart attack in very early August 2016. He changes the month of her death to July on the chorus to fit the flow better.

Rogers heads to her best friend's home:

And by the time he wakes
I'll be halfway to my best friend's home

She regrets missing out on the opportunities for fun within their friendship.
  • Zach Bryan and Maggie Rogers co-wrote the song between them. Bryan co-produced it with his regular producer, Eddie Spear. Their production is more polished and colorful than the stripped-back sound of his previous material.
  • Philadelphia Eagles' fan Zach Bryan promised to release the song if the Eagles beat the New York Giants in their January 22, 2023 NFL playoff game. They won emphatically, and the singer kept his word, making the track officially public five days later.
