Dave from Tujunga25 Or 6 to 4 is a reference to LSD-25, the designation for the precise formula that chemist Albert Hoffman of the Sandoz Laboratories developed that finally "got it right" . In his book LSD – My problem Child, chapter Lysergic Acid and Its Derivatives, Albert Hofmann states;
"… In 1938, I produced the twenty-fifth substance in this series of lysergic acid derivatives: lysergic acid diethylamide, abbreviated LSD-25 (Lyserg-säure-diäthylamid) for laboratory usage. …"
It was Hofmann's 25th attempt a making a successful synthesis of the natural compound found in ergot mold, it has nothing to do with dosage.
As it was given it's name in the German language the letters, LSD, are an abbreviation , or acronym, for ‘Lysergsäurederivat’ which means Lysergic acid derivative and not "Lysergsäurediäthylamid", which is German for lysergic acid diethylamide.
I knew a couple of classmates that took their first dose in 1065, and they always referred to it as LSD-25, although in mixed, or uncertain company, over the telephone, etc., they would use euphemisms that they, themselves, had made up, such as Mr. Dilly Dilly 5 by 5 [5 X's 5, as in 5 X 5 = 25] for one example.
They were also the most avid and hardcore audiophiles I've ever known [record collectors, that also prided themselves on knowing everything they could possibly learn about any band, or musician, at the time they liked and, or, everyone was keen on at the time] When Chicago released this song, they both had a copy of it on the very first day, and they both immediately concluded that it could only be about taking LSD -25. As to the "6 to 4", it was their mutual opinion that it referred to a ten hour trip that lasted from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m. because they had both done exactly that on a number of occasions. One of those gents took an estimated 1500 trips, over the six year span, while He was in junior and senior high school. He was extremely intelligent with an I.Q. [as it was tested in those days] over 140, which is [or was back then. That test is no longer used from what I've heard, nor are I.Q. grades, I believe?] the threshold that you had to exceed to be labeled as a "genius" by psychologists. As to exactly how high an I.Q. he actually had, I never got to know because He was modest about it. In the senior year at high school He took the SAT and got a score of 1300, then two weeks later He was paid $50 to take the test for a friend, [it was far easier to get away with impersonations in the late 60's] He decided that since it wasn't his test, that He might as well take a tab of LSD, as He certainly believed that even if it didn't go well that He would at least get the fellow a higher score than his friend would be able to do on his own. He got a perfect score that day. I didn't try it until I was almost 23, clear windowpane, a four way hit, but I wasn't told it was a "four way hit". I took the entire thing...about 1500 mics. Blast off. I had no need to try it again.

Daya from CtI just finished watching “The Terry Kath Experience” made by his daughter, and featuring all the members of the band, and many others, including Terry’s wife. A great film if you are the mildest bit interested in him and/or Chicago.
There was specific mention of this song and what the lyrics meant, in the film, starting at about 44 minutes in. It was made clear that this was indeed a ‘drug reference’ in a very sly, vague way, and while not specifically mentioned, it seems to me at least, that it was about cocaine. But see what Camelia has to say about it, and see the film and draw your own conclusions.

John Lennon had to hold up a Julian Lennon child drawing and say "see, it says Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. It's about the drawing not LSD". Yea right. If the picture said "Fred in the Basement with trains" would he have written a song? Of course, that is what you have to say for so many different reasons. About the only time, anybody couldn't claim it wasn't about the drug was one Eric Clapton wrote called "Cocaine".
By the time 25 or 6 to 4 came out millions of people had taken sojourn journeys on LSD so when we heard the music and listened to the lyric lights went off in our heads. I guess it's not as obvious to those that didn't go there. Jimi Hendrix titled an album after his song "Are You Experienced". Does anybody really want to argue about what that meant? He was saying there are people who have had the "experience" and those that haven't. I can tell you the first people who bought that album were those that were experienced, followed by those that would become experienced followed by those the knew a great guitar player when they heard one.
Often the LSD experience is hard-edged. It's not about paisleys and flowers and commercial psychedelic imagery. The music has those sharp edges. The starting grove arguably the most powerful of all time even up against the power of Led Zep (another band LDS users loved). That drum part reaches out and grabs you by the throat and says "Do I have your attention?!!"
The most important thing acid does is that it strips you of your past and your future. On the full-blown journey, I didn't know my name, didn't recognize the picture on my driver's license and had not a clue where Columbus Ohio was because I was not in Columbus Ohio. I knew only where I was, not where I'd been, not where I'd be even in the next moment. That is not for the faint of heart. Where am I? I am here. What time is it? It is now... then now is gone, then it's now...then now is gone. In the everyday world, we tend not to focus on the here and now and are easily distracted by past events and thoughts of the future and that tendency is at the root of many problems. In reality, the past is gone, you can't get it back and the future has to run through the moment. Everything you do in the moment creates an outcome. (in quantum physics it's called waveform collapse). The only thing real in the world is the here and now, and even that has built-in uncertainty. So when acid stips you of your past and you can't imagine a future if you don't have images from the past, you are stuck in the here and now. When that happens you panic. But you get over it and how long it takes to get over it has a weird answer because time becomes mutable. You step outside the orderly flow of time. Time can even reverse flow or almost completely stop so there are worlds that can exist between seconds. So much time can seemingly go by in seconds you start to think "man, when am I going to come down". You assume you will, still, it's a good question.
But the point is that when stuck in the here and now you have to do something. You're in a world and it has events, you're in a body (of one kind or another). So each time you reach the next second you come closer to a time when the body will need attention. You'd get thirsty for instance. So something so simple can become a quest. But everything you do, every decision you make suddenly feels like it's a life or death situation. If you are around people you don't know you get paranoid because they are going about normal life and you feel like your life in the next moment is on the line if you don't have the right change for the coke machine and you know if you have to get change someone is going to find out your on acid and that's the worse thing that can happen. This is an example of something that actually happened to me as part of my big trip and I use it as an example of the intensity of the experience.
Us trippers could sense that intensity in this song. In the song, the writer has put himself in a fix by having to write something on deadline while deep into an acid trip where all he has available to him to use in the song is the fix he's in. All he can do is describe the moment over and over again until he comes down. Change the order of the lines a bit and it becomes a desperate attempt to simply describe exactly what is happening in a moment, then another. No references to the past. He knows nothing about what will happen next to other than know there will be a break of day.
Where am I? "I'm sitting crossleg on the floor". What am I doing? "Searching for something to say (boy, do I know that one), and I notice lights across the sky". What do I do next? "giving up I close my eyes." Maybe I'll come down at daybreak "What time is it?" 25 or 6 24.
Now, with that frame of reference just listen to the rest of the song and note the lyrics. It's exactly the same thing. Why would he be "staring blindly into space"? I can tell you more than a million of us knew exactly what he was going through. He has no past images to think of anything to say. He has to write a song. I can tell you he felt like he would die if he didn't write the song. Even in the regular world, he was being hounded to write more, write more, there's a deadline, write more. Add acid to that mix and it must have felt like eternal death coming down on him.
But when stuck in the here and now long enough you get it. (there's a lot that can happen between 26 to 4 and 25 to4) It dawns on you that the here and now is all there is so figure it out. And maybe if you can purely express it magic will happen. He had that epiphany and realized all he had to do was write that, and write music that matched the intensity and magic will happen. Magic is exactly what happened. He was at the height of his powers, he'd done his homework, mastered his skills, paid his dues so all he had to do was let it flow through him. I saw them do it when Chicago III was out and it was already their encore song. I saw them again in 1989 and it was still their encore song. It is the song that brings the house down because it perfectly describes a moment with no pretense.
Now, I don't really believe in magic. Magic is merely something the magician understands, and you don't. But I believe that artists can get us as close to magic as we're ever going to get. Art, music, dance, theater, even being a magician is an art. I mean Arts that involve becoming a craftsman first. Getting so proficient at something that you can get your body out of the way and open up your mind and see what will come through from somewhere else. I know there is a somewhere else. I've been there. But comparatively it was like technicolor and when I came back the only words I had were words that described black and white and endless variations of gray. I think because of the music from another song. Because this music of this song came from the song 'Baby I'm Gonna Leave You' on its first album in 1969. Because the guitar's riff of that song wsa very similar to the one of 'Baby I'm Gonna Leave You'. So that means the song almost ready to record in the studio whenever they could. Also the reason I think that the song '25 OR 25 To 4' was influenced by the song 'Sunshine Of Your Love' was that there were some key words on that song. On ''25 OR 25 To 4', take a look at this line,'Waiting for the break of day'. On the other hand, on ''Sunshine Of Your Love', 'it's gettin near dawn'. I think both lyrics almost the same meaning ! The heavy guitar riff with wha wha distortion. This is really what my mom called "acid" rock. Psychedelic as it it gets. At some points Cetera is screaming The word Four. I've never done LSD. But I imagine it Sound very much like that. Close your eyes, crank it up and feel what the song says. You'll get it.

Mike from OhioThe band has been very open about their drug use. So much so Robert Lamm admitted to having to get loaded just to attend Terry Kath's funeral. There would be no reason to hide a drug reference. The lyrics are about writing a song. For those who use the line "spinning room is sinking deep" the original version of which I have heard, was "spinning wheel is sinking deep" referring to the clock. However, Blood, Sweat and Tears released "Spinning Wheel" before they recorded 25 or 6 to 4 and the decision was made to change that line. Not sure if it was because the lyric in combination with the title of another new horn band's song would confuse people or if suggested by the producer James William Guercio, who had just finished producing the BS&T album as a condition (and to practice getting horns recorded well) to being allowed to make the Chicago album. They were after all friends from college he was personally trying to get going.

The release of the song and the Shootings both took place in 1970. I remember hearing the news and seeing the front page of the Newspaper when this happened. Doesn't anyone realize this chord progression is one of the most used and abused in rock music? Randy Jackson of Zebra once did and interesting demonstration of an XM radio boneyard concert where he was explaining where he came up with the song "Tell Me What You Want". He played snippets of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" segued into "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" and then to "25 or 6 to 4" and finally to "Tell Me What You Want" and you can see the obvious connection. So if Chicago ripped off Zeppelin, then Zeppelin ripped off the Beatles, but that has been going on since music began, should be no surprise to anyone. Why not just enjoy the music. "Horse" is the Instrumental B Side version to The Singles A Side "Love Is Alright" So Chicago also took a play from Cliff Nobles... Great Timeless Hit no matter what decade.. This was a topic of conversation at our Class Reunion Committee party.
Steve from Seattle, WaThe references surely can be interpreted with poetic license. However Hoffman, and Leary, Owsley, Kesey, et al tried LSD because the experience was beyond description. Also LSD was not made illegal untill after 1967, the year this song was written. (Led Zepplin's BIGLY was written in 1969.) What Gary in Chicago wrote holds true, especially for those who have had the experience. Correction however. LSD as manufactured illicitly is not pure and contains substances that are "speedy" and keep you awake. You could take some acid and go to sleep early then wake up an hour later to CCR's "Lookin' Out Your Back Door". LSD crosslinks the senses, so reducing input by closing your eyes can lessen the intensity of hallucinations. Friends on acid babble when they talk, sitting on the floor keeps you from running into things. LSD's action was about 6 hours. Short term tolerance (24 hours) meant you would have to take 2x/3x when you were coming down to get the same (but lower quality) high. Too much sensory input and you could get a "bad trip" which is emotionally wrenching. To cancel the LSD high one would take tranquilizers, quite often methylqualone or Qualudes (or 'Ludes for short) which were large flat yellow tablets with the numbers 624 on them, hence 25 or 624, should I continue the trip or stop it.

Chicago's "25 or 6 to 4" was recorded Aug 1969 and released June 1970
Zeppelin's "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" was recorded Oct 1968 and released in January 1969
So Zeppelin not only recorded BIGTLY earlier they released it before Chicago had recorded 25r624.
There is a strong possibility Chicago were influenced by listening to Zeppelin on the radio since BIGLY would have been on the airways for atleast 7 months! So yeah Chicago ripped of Zeppelin, but I would expect not intentionally. Maybe they felt that riffs wern't something that belonged to one group but the whole music community.
what about BIGLY itself? Was it ripped of another artist? Well, depend on what part your talking about. The lyrics were taken from another song by that sounded nothing like BIGLY. The MUSIC however is original to Jimmy Page. In fact it was one of the songs he was working on before forming zeppelin and worked with other artist in brief.
We also have to keep in mind that Jimmy Page was a studio session guitarist before his fame, where he was employed by a LOT of bands to play guitar in studios, and he is unoffically credited with a LOT of riffs that upcoming bands used in their songs but never gave him credit or royalties. Maybe he is entitled to use some of the riffs...don'cha'think?

In the movie Captain Newman, MD (1963), Gregory Peck injects a patient with a drug, and there is close up of the bottle. The label says "Lysergic Acid Diethylamide, 25 or 6 to 4" I have seen this scene at least three times.
It is not totally clear what the term means. 25 is easy to explain: The term LSD comes from the initials of the German for lysergic acid diethylamide, or Lysersäure Diethylamid. "The number "25" following it has many myths attached to it, such as it was the 25th form of LSD that Hofmann tried, or it was his 25th attempt to make LSD. From my own experience with chemical companies that are allied with pharmaceutical houses, I had assumed that the chemical name (which might be a mouthful for the pharmacologist) was simply replaced with a pronounceable code number equivalent. But the answer here is yet simpler. Chicago was never sued though, probably because Led Zeppelin was too busy fighting their own legal battle after not crediting Anne Bredon. Either way, I love both songs and Kath's solo in this song is probably my favorite guitar solo of all-time.

Zeppelin reccorded Zeepelin I w/ Babe..Leave you in 1968 and released it on January 69, so it would seem that Lamm (Chicago) had the opertunity to hear it first from their favorite record store. How would Page Hear it if Chicago didn't release it until 1970? Zeppelin did great rips, but I dont think this is one of them. They are both great, but lets keep the facts straight.

But it makes a lot more sense to assume that not every song is about drugs, and that "25 or (2)6 to 4" refers to a time.

That being said, I strongly believe because so much music has been written that it is nearly impossible to write a riff that hasn't been already done. Be it not "Stolen" or "copied", but reproduced. "Flashing lights against the sky" I needn't explain that one much.

The first time I heard it, I immediately "got it", and it is the only only explantion that makes perfect sense with every single word of the song.

Everyone else can accept on faith, or deny by skepticism.

"25" IS LSD, period. LSD was commonly called nmany things back then, and 25 was one of the more common slang terms.
"6 to 4" IS a reference to the EXACT time on the clock. It is 3:54 AM, period.
Time goes by UNBELIEVABLY slowly on LSD.
A 12 hour trip may seem, subjectively, like days and days, or centuries.
Someone beginning to come down from an acid trip is ACUTELY aware of the time, on a second to second basis, if they care to be.

The story goes, that when the police arrived at the scene. Witnesses were asked for the approximate time of the incident. The response was, "Around 25, or 26 to 4 in the morning." The rest of the lyrics basically refer to how one handles such a situation. That's my story... and I'm sticking to it. :)

The song is on the album Insomniac, but I do not beleive Insomniac exists as a song. The first time I heard 25 or 6 to 4 (curse my youth, it was after brain stew) I knew Green Day had stolen from it...I hope they got sued! As for the song being about acid...I think that it's easy to apply a drug-related meaning to anything. ANY meaning to anything, really. It doesn't seem to me like this has to be about drugs at all. I always saw the "dancing lights" as what you get after looking at a light and then against something dark. This is solely a theory, and I am by no means proclaiming this as the "true" meaning, but I am simply just adding my input and throwing another point of view into the ballpark. Never the less, Chicago is an extremely talented and underrated band, and this song is truly amazing, and skillfully created, no matter the meaning.
Jason from New Haven, Ct624 refers to quaaludes which is a very strong sedetive which used to be readily available in this country at the time of this song and was taken to get high. On the back of quaaludes there are the numbers 624.
I have no idea what 25 refers to but it could be in reference to LSD. Quaaludes are a drug that can be taken to ease the coming down of tripping and allow you to fall asleep.
The lyrics of the song make perfect sense if you think of it this way.

As a songwriter myself, I can see the comparison to that as strongly as the former trippers can see the comparison to LSD. Not sure there's enough evidence to suggest that the band's been lying about its meaning.

Maybe the song is a comparison of not being able to sleep and being wired on LSD. Chances are they were high when writing this song, there's no way they were lacking creativity.
Ray from Redondo Bch, Ca Not knowing what these guys were doing when these lyrics where being created (and nobody except for them probably knows), I would assume if it was LSD (which I can clearly see it to be). I think they were tripping big time, that's why they needed the 'splashing water on my (their) face'. If you have ever taken LSD, there's a gross film of sweat that forms on your face, and water not only helps to get that film off, but also wakes you up by not having that feeling of dirtiness. And you may find yourself needing to sit down and try to get you bearings straight as well... especially if you're not having a good experience. Crossed legged is a kind of a mystical way to sit down. Everyone knows that the 60's were heavily influenced by mysticism, with guru's, etc... In some religions, to sit crossed legged, in some shape or form, is how one gets centered, that's probably the case with these guys in the song, but I may be wrong, again, nobody knows except for them... BUT, I think the lyrics do show a drug influence.
Maybe a happy medium is where the title's meaning lies. And just maybe the song title has a play on words, representing both possibilities; with a hidden message of 25R624 (the chemical designation for LSD25), which sounds factual (I'm really not going to search to see if that's true or not, but it sounds good to me)... at the same time, representing the time; since the only grammatical way to make sense of the title, would be the physical time; 3:35 AM (25 to 4) or 3:34 AM (26 to 4), because the title does have OR, not R, and the word TO, not the number 2. In the 60's and the early 70's, many songs had lyrics that had dual meanings (e.g. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds), whether or not the writers meant it specifically, or if they did it without thinking thoroughly the purpose of the dual meanings. BUT, it is quite obvious that the Beetles meant LSD with Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. And just maybe, Chicago thought of their title of having dual meanings as well.
The specific time 3:30ish may have been when they wrote or experienced the lyrics, and the coincidental lyrics regarding acid could be a hidden message to someone who has used acid, and maybe that's the way they wanted, a kind of parablesecret that only dope heads would know, and so they decided to write the title to have the dual meaning. After all, those were the days when lyrics, song titles, album cover art meant more than they do today. And I also want to add, those were the days when lyrics could be anything, and freewill was given to the listeners to decide what it means. Take for instance 'Looking out my backdoor' by CCR.

Why does everyone have to tie everything to drugs? We all try to find hiden meanings to songs and most times they are all wrong! I have sat and written things and my friends have commented on the meanings of what I have wrote and they are wrong... not even close.Just sit back, listen, enjoy, and don't try to "tag" things. However, the actual lawsuit was with the group, Green Day, which copied the riff of "25 or 6 to 4" for one of their songs. I don't know which song. But, I don't know if there was a lawsuit.
Schuyler from Clearfield, PaThe lyrics 25 or 6 to 4 has no hidden meaning. In production of the song they had not found anything suitable to plug into that part of the song. At one point in a long recording session the time was asked and given...25 or 6 to 4. This was plugged in with intent to be replaced but never was. There is no secret drug formula regarding that lyric, the rest of lyrics are fair game though

Take it from an insomniac, the description is pretty accurate. Especially the part in the second verse:

The song's meaning is clearly metioned in its title; the numbers represent one of the chemical compositions of Lysergic Acid Diethylamide, also referred to as LSD-25 since it was the 25th formulation - or the 25th derivative of lysergic acid that inventor Dr. Albert Hoffman had worked with. In 1943, after experimenting with the chemical compound, Hoffman entered a lab report in his notebook. On 4/16 Dr. Hoffman had to leave work in the lab and go home because he felt strangely restless and dizzy. He got home, lay down and sank into a not unpleasant delirium which was characterized by an extreme degree of fantasy (a kind of trance). He kept his eyes closed because he found the daylight very unpleasant. Fantastic visions of extraordinary vividness accompanied by a kaleidoscopic-like play of intense coloration continuously swirled around his head. The condition lasted for about two hours. What relevance the 06 24 comes in I don't know. Perhaps the wrong date was used in the song, either inadvertently, or intentionally - to make the song flow better lyrically.
