  • When you try your best but you don't succeed
When you get what you want but not what you need
When you feel so tired but you can't sleep
    Stuck in reverse

When the tears come streaming down your face
When you lose something you can't replace
When you love someone but it goes to waste
    Could it be worse?

    Lights will guide you home
    And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

High up above or down below
When you're too in love to let it go
If you never try you'll never know
    Just what you're worth

    Lights will guide you home
    And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

    Tears stream down your face
When you lose something you cannot replace
    Tears stream down your face
    And I

    Tears stream down your face
I promise you I will learn from my mistakes
    Tears stream down your face
    And I

    Lights will guide you home
    And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you Writer/s: Christopher Anthony John Martin, Guy Rupert Berryman, Jonathan Mark Buckland, William Champion

  • Smaug from NyWhen I first heard “Fix You” I liked the melody, but that he wanted to “fix” someone didn’t sit well with me. So I looked up the lyrics, reread them a few times, and realized this is a very personal song about someone very dear to him who went through a terribly difficult time that really brought them to a place of giving up, like depression. Now I hear “Fix You” as a short and sweet way of saying “I’m here for you. I care for you. I support you. I will help you in any way I can …. Because I love you.”

I never thought it about since, until I happen to come across this site, so I Googled “Fix You,” released in 2005. According to Wikipedia, “Chris Martin and the band wrote the song about his then wife, Gwyneth Paltrow, whom he met shortly after her father’s death.” “Bruce Paltrow died on October 3, 2002, at the age of 58, [due to complications from oral cancer and pneumonia] while vacationing in Rome, Italy, to celebrate his daughter’s 30th birthday. In 2002, three weeks after Paltrow's death, his daughter Gwyneth met Coldplay singer Chris Martin, whom she married in 2003. The 2005 Coldplay album X&Y carried a dedication to Bruce Paltrow, and the song "Fix You" was written to help Gwyneth through her grief.”
  • Dragonfly from BcI really like this song. If I’m not mistaken, Chris Martin wrote it when his wife was going through a difficult time. I hear the “I will fix you,” lyric as saying “I will support you/I will be here for you,” not as literally trying to fix someone. Hopefully he’ll explain it one day. Great voice. Great band.
  • SasquatchI don’t like the lyrics to this song. Too often in relationships I see that people believe it’s their role to “fix” their partner or their spouse. I get that it’s a nice melody and it tries to sound empathetic I guess but to me it falls short quite epically by encouraging people to fix others and to get themselves fixed. We are not machines. What we need is healing, not fixing. And while we can give consolation that can go a long way and help out those we care about more often than not what we need is the healing of the heart. You will never find peace if you focus on fixing others and not working on yourself. It’s definitely OK to ask for help but your friend or therapist shouldn’t be tasked with fixing you but rather giving consolation and tools to help you.
  • Ray Moon from Liberty, Sc, UsaI love it and it does help in hard times No one better than Chris to do it.
  • Rob from Los AngelesIt would've been nice to discover this artist on my own but to have it thrust upon me devalued its message and took away from it's goal. Manipulation & coercion is an egregious evil.
  • Raerae from BrisbaneChris wrote it for Gwyneth

  • Zabadak from LondonUnless I miss my guess, the video starts off with Chris in a tunnel under the railway which leads to Bermondsey via Bermondsey Street
  • Chike Donald Ibewuike from NigeriaA song that gets you going through the roughest times... Bless your heart, Chris.
  • Michael Genesis RamosIt was really a masterpiece.
  • Predexus Alortain from MontanaAh, a song that let's us know that we are never alone. When I hear quite a bit of Coldplay songs, it sounds like it's God reaching out, like as though it's a conversation between mankind and God. And this isn't really my opinion. It's more of fact. Every good thing comes from the father of lights (Jesus) And yes that includes songs with good purposes. Good purposes used to condemn someone into becoming a new born again believer in Christ. Roman's 10:9 If any out there are broken, know that there is one who will heal you, and avenge you. Just call on the name of Jesus.
  • Maggie from TexasI personally think this song is about a very close family member, a partner, or just a close friend. My dad played this song for me when I was a little younger and since then, all I can do is bawl my eyes out when I listen to the song. This song is very meaningful and gives such a sympathetic feeling to listeners. It’s such a great song to cry to!
  • Elle from UsaLights will guide you home
    And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

Perhaps he is saying that despite experiencing such great loss, eventually you can come to an understanding and find a type of clarity that will bring you past that empty/surreal feeling into a place of feeling alive and secure once again. It sounds like from that place he is hopeful that he can be her answer. Beautiful sentiment, but high hopes for a mere human as fragile as the rest.
  • David Funez from Brawley CaI say it's about losing a relationship making you heart broken. Making you not sleep & lost. Then your mother will be there to help you/fix you. Making feel OK.
  • Ceci from Miami, Flit might have to do something with the holy spirit 'ignite your bones' since fire is a symbol of the holy spirit... maybe it means the holy spirit will make the person stronger. Chris Martin is an 'alltheist' which means he believes in everything i think.
  • Ceci from Miami, FlI think ignite your bones means to make you warm on the inside.... not cremation
  • Ceci from Miami, Flumm.. hello chris martin is NOT on drugs (to the person who said the song was about heroine) I know that for a fact....
  • R from Sydney, Australiais it true that 'ignite your bones' is talking about cremation? my cousin told me that but i wasn't sure....
  • M from Frederick, MdThis song is about grief and grief is such big subject, people grieve for so many different things at different times in their lives. Right now I am grieving the loss of my childhood so I think this song is about fixing yourself his inner child, and I think Chris is singing to himself, but when I go to grieve something else, it will apply to that. That's what makes this song so awesome, helpful, universal, and epic.
  • M from Frederick, MdThis song is very comforting and it's about grief, which is a big topic, people grieve for so many reasons, like for me right now, I am grieving for my lost childhood and so I think he is singing to comfort himself. Next time I am grieving something else it will be about that for me, that's what makes this song so awesome and universal and epic.
  • Elaine from Glasgow, United KingdomThis is a beautiful song and extremely emotional, i recently lost my brother-in-law, who listened to this song constantly after he lost his wife 7yrs ago, sadley he took his own life and this song was choosen by his 16yr old daughter for his funeral. Everything in it tells the story of how he was feeling, however he wasnt able to fix himself, so for each and everyone of us these words will mean something different, for him it didnt help. but a lovely song that will now always remind me of him. lets hope he finds the light!!!
  • Brandon from Taylor, MiI was dealing with being in love with a girl I won't get ever, my goal is to one day be a airline pilot. to distract my self I started doing research on the subject emailing pilots watching documentaries etc... I guess the air is the only place I feel safe and I heard this song, and I just broke down in tears, I couldn't hold it back I just could cry.

it was not about the girl but it was about moving on with my life about turning to another chapter, and even though I made mistakes I was stupid it is about becoming what it means to be a man, and to be a man a real man is to show emotion not to be afraid of not showing it.
  • Rachael from Addlestone, United KingdomThis song was being played frequently on the radio when my son was diagnosed with ADHD. I drove my car with tears streaming down my face. 5 years on and I know my son did not need 'fixing' and I love and accept him for who he is and would not have him any other way.
  • Dan from Lockport, NyI think Chris Martin felt a lot of what has been posted above when he wrote this song.I definitley think Gweneth and their family has a lot do in every song he writes.Fix You, in particular,I believe is a song about someone who is going through crisis, and the ones that love them that cannot fix their pain, but wishes they could.Unconditional Love.
  • H from Austin, TxPointless bickering about where this is used or why is so beyond the intent...

What else could it possibly be about than what you make of it, it's love incarnate.

    Listen, enjoy, love life.
  • Knoxie from Liverpoool, Vanuatuthis song has been played in so many funerals because its one of the most emotional songs ever wrote.
this song is all about a mum who tried to save his son who was taking drugs it was too late she tried to "fix"
  • Shilo from Noneofyourbuisness, ItalyThis is one of my favorite songs of all time. What else is there to be said? Thanks,Coldplay ^^ ~Shilo~
  • Ben from Birmingham, United KingdomAwesome Song! And I Heard The Beginning Where You Here The Organs Was Inspired By A Song From Muse
  • Michele from Chicago, IlChris Martin wrote the song FIX YOU for Gweynth Paltrow. It is about the death of her father, Bruce. Man, don't any of you people know anything?
  • Funlop from London, United Kingdomi think people take this too spiritually. I read somewhere that this song is about his car that he has had since uni.. it broke down and the mechanic said there was no real option but to completely redo it or just give up on it.. it was a sad day for him innit?
  • Ashley from Adelaide, AustraliaOkay! To everyone who thinks this song is about heroine and drugs.
'' Feeling so tired you cannot sleep"
Think about it, when you lie awake thinking about something big that has happened it is hard to sleep.
Coldplay have wrote an amazing song, its one of there best and so what if it was on The O.C
It made the moment perfect, and more dramatic with such a deep emotional song.
    This song is a masterpiece.
Has coldplay ever been on the news for drugs?? Or in the papers?
No, would a top actress be dating a druggie and have kids.? I think not!
They are good people, a greater band and have done lots of charity work!
So give them the credit for it instead of dissing there good name.
And thanks to everyone writing the meaning was for Gwen, about her fathers death!
You's really helped me with a major English assignment!

    xx
  • Grace from Bundaberg, AustraliaWhen Chris Martin sings, he jets so caught up in singing the song and he just loses him self.

    Amazing.
    Coldplay is pure genius.
  • Jesus Of Suburbia from Frinton On Sea, AlThis is 1 of the greatest songs of all time its up there with Bohemian Rhapsody and Stairway to Heaven This isn't sad to me it's a happy love song
  • Corey Maller from Roslyn Heights, NyI love the part after the second chorus where the guitar suddenly comes in.
  • Stephen from Newcastle, EnglandJust a beautiful ambigious feel good song. Can't be pinned down to one thing, except being totally uplifting.
  • Sc from Redlands, Cathe person he wants to fix his himself!!!
  • Sc from Redlands, Cai've just rediscovered this song. i'm a huge coldplay fan now i know why. i think martin is really singing to himself and he has lost himself in a failed relationship and has ignored his inner psyche, unconscious self. he now knows that he has compromised himself all along and was being driven by his ego(conscious self).through the loss he experiences in this relationship he now awakens to his inner self. he has to listen to the summons of his soul and "find" his way home. the home of his soul!! his soul inviting him to a larger life. undoubtedly the pain of the failed separation still persists but on the other side will be meaning
  • Tai from San Diego, United Stateswell i like this song i mean i listen to it alot because the lyrics when you loose someting you can't replace just gets to me because i know i'm goign to loose my best friend as we go our seperate ways in high school and i just don't want it to happen but then i think aabout all we've done together and i dunnoe its hard to explain but this song kinda tells me that i can go on with out her even though she is my best freind i can still call her
  • Kek from Sydney, AustraliaI love this song, the lyrics, the music, it's just awesome! I could listen to it over and over again for years and not get sick of it.
  • Isabelle from Uppsala, SwedenColdplay is one of the best bands in the world. Fix You is one of the best songs in the world. It's about love. Love is one of the best things in the world! :D Without it, we wouldn't have Fix You..:D
  • Trace from Renfrew, MsI think this is a song about sadness, hoplessness....and that love is there go guide you through it (be it god or human). It could be comforting someone through the death of a loved one...or even giving someone suicidal hope that things will be okay......."lights will guide you home...." You'll find your way back from despair....cause someone, something, somewhere will try to fix you.....
  • Bryan from Spring, TxThis song was awesome at the end of the movie You, Me, and Dupree.
  • J from Nyc, NyWhoever thinks this is about drugs or heroin is an idiot, just because the word "fix" is in there, doesn't automatically mean drug fix. As for for "Feeling so tired you cannot sleep" yeah, that can happen with prolonged drug use, it can also happen if you have a lot on your mind, you can be sober and certain events can make you mentally strung out.
  • Sam from Provo, Utben from england, how can you say that this is a depressing song? chris martin said that this was their version of a gospel song. how can you say the guitar part is depressing?
  • Marla from San Diego, CaI heard in an interview with Chris Martin that the whole X&Y album is based on this song
  • Emily from Huntington, WvI love this song... I wish they'd stop using Coldplay music for retarded episodes of The OC and Laguna Beach.

    God.
  • Mark from Manila, OtherI love this song... Reminds me of my mistakes and other hard times..that now I have yet to learn and fix...Coldplay one of the best or if you like the best...
  • Pianogodd from New Boston, Txerg! there's some of the little X&Y code in the background of the movie, i wish i knew what it said.
  • Pianogodd from New Boston, Txwhether this song is about death, love, or transvestites?..............it makes you think alot, and that's what i like about the band, only the smart people who are kind can get the true goodness out of the nad's songs.
  • Rachel from South Point, OhGreat song. Scrubs used this on one of last night's episodes.
  • Maria from St. Pete, Flin and interview on fuse tv chris said that this song was about a cross dressed he met on the streets on england...i personally would love to believe that it was for his wife after her father died, but the whole cross dresser thing works just think about a transvestite then read the lyrics its just kind of wierd.
  • Ariana from Lima, Perudepresing?? they RULE..the lyrics r just so simple, that's wut makes them wonderful..my dad dcided he liked coldplay so he bought their last cd..i broke down n cried da first time i heard this song..it was probably the exact thing i was living by the moment..i'm not really sure..all i know is that i loved it from the very first time..it remindes me of my best friend..it fits exactly 2 wut we have btween us..i mean..the lyrics fit both ways..4 me..n 4 her..
  • Ben from Ringwood, EnglandColdplay are too Depressing
  • Jeevan from Brampton, CanadaThis song is so cool. At first, I didn't like it, but then I thought it was cool. Coldplay is really a good band.
  • Mona from Calgary, Canadathis song has changed the life of myself and my best friend, its just a speechless song. it has brought my relationship with this person to life, when before it was always known.
  • Tanner from Springville, UtThis is such a powerfull song. i love it!! it is so humanistic. you really know Chris Martin was feeling greef for his wif Gwenyth. everyone goes through a momment like this in there life.

    much love....
  • Mochi from Calgary, CanadaWhen I first heard this, I assumed it was about Chris Martin's daughter. After reading some of the posts here and having another listen, I'm willing to believe it is a consoling song to his wife after her father's death. The opening organ sounds much like a pipe organ from a church or funeral parlor.
  • Grace from Fairfax Station, VaThis song is very beautiful. I hear it's a song for Gwyneth Paltrow to comfort her after her father died.
  • Sarah from Sunderland, CanadaThis song was for Gwyneth Paltrow, for when her father passed away, this purpose of the song is helping someone through grief. "Light's will guide you home and I will try and fix you"
  • Dani from Southampton, EnglandI think this song can be interpreted as being completely helpless when you really want to help someone. The video is a complete let down for a beautiful song. Thank you for the comments because they have really helped me as for part of my english course i have to film a music video and i will use this song with your ideas.
  • Jb from Chicago, IlI heard ona local radio station here in Chicago, the song was written for his and Gwenyth's daughter Apple. Take a listen.
  • Steve from Sacramento, CaI'd go with the heroin thing, the line: "When you feel so tired you cannot sleep"

Kurt Cobain wrote in Pennyroyal Tea as part of the chorus, "I'm so tired I can't sleep".
  • Kimberly from Greeley, CoI did enjoy reading K's comment and I think what Andy said was harsh. I don't like the song or Coldplay's voice. They are too light rock or whatever, but the lyrics are nice and I've always changed the channel before I could get to the end, but it is touching and I have absolutely no idea where Evan and Robert got the idea that it's about heroin or masturbation. If you want a masturbation song, listen to Longview by Green Day.
  • Evan from Valparaiso, Inthis song is about heroin. for sure. they are all dopeheads. think about it. kbye.
  • Francesca from Preston, EnglandThe first time I heard Fix You was when I saw Coldplay in concert in Bolton. Chris Martin said that they were going to play the song twice because they were filming the video!!!!!! I heard it and it was so beautiful. My favourite song by them is The Scientist, but i really love this song. It was an amazing experience, i recommend seeing them in concert to anybody!
  • Andy from Windom, MnI just discovered a really interesting coincidence with this song. In the newly released movie Proof, Gwenyth Paltrow plays a woman who's father dies and is nearly overcome with depression. The day after I saw the movie, I bought the X&Y album and discovered this song, which was written to console Gwenyth when her real father died. Wierd!
  • Andy from Windom, MnK, you are clearly trying to explain a meaning which is non-existant. Your argument's logic is muddled; you are reaching for something that's not there. How could bones possibly be a metaphor for the mind!? The song is for Chris Martin's wife.
  • K from Clearwater , FlAfter reading the posted comments I kind of have to agree that It might be for his wife. Makes sence. But before reading, I thought he might be singing about the Lord Jesus Christ.

"When you try your best but you don't succeed"

    - Most people thank God for thier achievements beacause with out him you can't succed. Try as hard as you might.

"When you get what you want but not what you need"
-People who have everything most times feel like they dont have what they really need. Ie. The love of Christ/Faith

"When you feel so tired but you can't sleep
    Stuck in reverse"
And the tears come streaming down your face
when you lose something you can't replace
When you love someone but it goes to waste
    Could it be worse?
    Lights will guide you home
    And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you"

-When your at your lowest and life seems like it can't get any worse. Who has the light to guide you home? Who can ignite your bones with the courage to keep going and make everything all right? (not bones in the literal sence. But bones meaning your mind. Igniting your mind to the Word.) You guessed it. Jesus thats who.

I could be wrong but thats what I get from it. Didn't think of it till recently though. In any case it's a spectacular song.

  • Tim from Milestone, CanadaIf you haven't seen the video for this yet get it, the part at the end where they are in concert and the crowd sings the last chorus with him is truly a beautiful thing.
  • Peter from Montrose, DcEmma you are correct it was written by Chris for Gwenyth after the death of her father... It is such a great song and the album is awesome too.
  • Emma from San Diego, CaThe first time I heard this beautiful song I fell in love with it. Then I started thinking maybe its about more than just the love of a man for a woman. I thought...Chris Martin wrote this song for his wife Gwenyth, after the death of her father, "when you lose something, you can't replace...I will try to fix you...tears stream down your face, when you lose something you cannot replace, tears run down your face and I will fix you..." It truly sounds like he was with his wife during the darkest time of her life and he was trying to save her, now that's love...
  • S from Boston, Mathis is an incredible song from an incredible album
