Songfacts®:

  • "My G" is Aitch's little sister Gracie Armstrong (her family call her "G"). Gracie has Down syndrome, and here the Manchester rapper describes the joy she brings to all who know her.

When you smile, you just light up the room
I ain't never met a person that's brighter than you

Aitch tells Gracie he will always be her loving and protective big brother

Out in public, you walk past them, they might look
Keep smilin', baby girl, and watch the day gon' brighten up
Know I'm still with ya, I'd kill for ya if someone tried their luck
  • Throughout the song, Aitch has a conversation with Gracie. "It's one to look back in 10 years and just laugh about – like yeah, you owe me one! But she'll love it," he told The Face. "She won't get it at first, I don't think. But then in a couple of years' time she'll be like, 'Ohhh!'"
  • Aitch recorded "My G" for his debut album, Close to Home. His father originally came up with the idea for a song dedicated to Gracie several years previously. "Since then, it's always been in the back of my mind," Aitch told Apple Music.
  • Ed Sheeran contributes a characteristic soaring vocal on the chorus. Aitch first met the pop star after he'd guested on grime DJ Sir Spyro's remix of Sheeran's song "Take Me Back To London." Because Sheeran is Gracie's favorite artist, Aitch sent him "My G," and he loved it. "He just sent me a Voice Note like, 'Think I'm gonna do this,' played the beat in the background and started singing," the Manchurian told Kiss.
  • Aitch and Ed Sheeran wrote "My G" with the rapper's go-to producers WhyJay and LiTek, and Fraser T. Smith (Adele's "Set Fire To The Rain," Stormzy's "Blinded By Your Grace, Pt. 2," Dave's "Black").
