Songfacts®:

  • Brandi Carlile wrote this song with her frequent collaborators Phil and Tim Hanseroth for Disney and Pixar's animated movie Onward. It was Carlile's first film assignment.
  • Set in a suburban fantasy world, Onward tells the story of two teenage elf brothers who set out on a quest to find a wizard's staff that will bring back their deceased father for 24 hours. Carlile explained that Disney and Pixar came to her asking if she could write a song about a bond between two brothers. "'Carried Me With You' is a song about not taking love for granted - accepting love even when you don't feel like you deserve it," she said.
  • A big fan of Pixar films, Carlile is enthusiastic about the life lessons that her two little girls, Evangeline and Elijah, will take from her song. "This is a profound sentiment for a kid's film," she shared. "This thing has weight to it and that's right up my alley. That's the kind of thing I want my kids to have to try and wrap their heads around."
