Songfacts®:

  • For Ginger, Brockhampton frontman Kevin Abstract wanted to let things flow organically and allow the guys' hearts to speak. This song takes the listener through a litany of different feelings including being there for their partner, wanting them by their side, confusion and slow heartbreak.
  • Spendin' all my nights alone, waitin' for you to call me
You're the only one I want by my side when I fall asleep
Tell me what I'm waitin' for, tell me what I'm waitin' for
I know it's hard but we need each other

Kevin Abstract told MTV News the song is about a relationship where you're uncertain where you stand.
"For me, it's alright to not really know what you're doing. It's alright to not have it figured out in terms of relationships and love and stuff like that," he said. "I feel like it's nice to have a song that kind of speaks to that feeling of not really knowing what's up. That's my takeaway every time we perform it onstage."
  • The song features vocal performances from four of the six vocal members of Brockhampton: Dom McLennon, Matt Champion, Bearface and Kevin Abstract.

California singer-songwriter Ryan Beatty also guests on the chorus. He previously accompanied the hip-hop boy band on the June 20, 2018 episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
  • The fifth single from Ginger, "Sugar" entered the Hot 100 at #70, marking Brockhampton's first placement on the chart.
  • Brockhampton released a remix featuring pop singers Dua Lipa and Jon B on March 6, 2020. Bearface and Joba recorded an alternate intro and outro for this new version, but Dom McLennon's verse is removed. Matt Champion's original verse is also scrapped, but he re-emerges with a new set of lyrics.
