Songfacts®:

  • Carter Faith was too busy for a relationship while she was promoting her 2025 debut album, Cherry Valley, but she met one guy who made her wish she had time to pursue one. The country singer spun the scenario into "Dead Horse," a new track on the deluxe version of the album, Cherry Valley Forever (2026).

"I met a guy when I was on the road, and I was like, it's not going to work out," she told the Off The Record podcast in 2026. "He lives very far away. But that's kind of what it was about. I was like, in a cool world, I would love to beat this dead horse into the ground and see what it would do, but I don't have time for that."
  • Beating a dead horse is an idiom about pursuing a hopeless endeavor, like an ill-fated romance. Faith also used it on "Ain't Over Me Yet," where she sings:

I'm all gussied up to get down
Beat a dead horse into the ground
