Songfacts®:

  • "2007" finds Charli XCX looking back to her early teenage years when she was inventing herself in her bedroom long before social media turned bedroom pop into a global industry.

I can take you to heaven like it's 2007
Pop star in my bedroom like it's 2007

2007 functions less as a literal timestamp and more as a cultural state of mind: the era of webcam YouTube covers, glitter-drenched MySpace profiles, and aspiring pop stars armed with little more than a laptop, a cheap mic, and supreme confidence. It was a time when "going viral" wasn't a career strategy, just something your computer occasionally did.
  • By 2007, Charli was already performing at illicit London raves, with her parents acting as chaperones while she opened the night's bill. The following year, she released her debut single, "!Franchesckaar!"

Speaking to Triple J, Charli recalled spending 2007 making experimental video art, describing herself as "very passionate" about filmmaking at the time, though she admitted feeling embarrassed that some of those videos are still circulating online.
  • In the end, the song is less about 2007 than about how fame has evolved. Charli told Vogue the track captures "how everybody can have their own moment of fabulousness all through their phone in 15 seconds. It's sort of the ultimate screen test."

She expanded on the idea in an interview with BBC Radio 1's Jack Saunders, explaining how the song is "about making TikToks, because it's like everyone can be a star from their bedroom... It's so Warholian in a way. Everybody can kind of have this moment where they blow up on TikTok because they've done a cool dance or a really aesthetically pleasing video."

In Charli's view, the internet has democratized pop stardom, allowing anyone to audition for fame with a swipe of a thumb.
  • At just 2:04, "2007" is one of the shortest and most understated tracks on Music, Fashion, Film. Its nostalgic tone provides a breather from the album's sharper-edged songs, such as "Rock Music" and "SS26," while continuing the record's fascination with celebrity, image and self-mythology alongside tracks like "Wink Wink" and "Camera."
  • Music, Fashion, Film was released with a self-directed album film that includes black‑and‑white visuals for all 11 tracks, including "2007," alongside behind‑the‑scenes footage and Charli’s spoken introductions.
